Farm Operator — Mereweather Estate, Dunkeld VIC
Permanent part-time | 3 days per week (generally Tuesday–Thursday) | Experienced livestock person
Mereweather is a family-owned sheep and cattle property of around 1,800 acres near Dunkeld in Western Victoria, running a self-replacing merino and crossbred flock alongside a cattle trading enterprise. It has been in the family for five generations and is run as a serious, well-organised business.
We're looking for an experienced Farm Operator to take on the day-to-day running of the livestock operation. This is a new position, created so the owner can step back from routine physical work and concentrate on managing the business. The right person will be given real responsibility and the room to run their own days.
This is not a trainee position. Previous livestock farming experience is essential.
The role
You'll progressively take ownership of the operational side of the farm, including:
- Sheep and cattle handling, movements and stock checks
- Drenching, vaccinating, drafting, weighing and lambing
- Animal health monitoring and early identification of problems
- Feeding and grazing operations
- Fencing, water systems, spraying and weed control
- Machinery operation and general maintenance
- Working alongside shearing, marking and other contractors
- Keeping accurate livestock and job records (simple farm software — training provided)
You'll set the week's priorities with the owner, then get on with it.
You'll be expected to notice what needs doing, deal with it, and tell the owner what he needs to know.
Who we're looking for
- Strong practical sheep experience; cattle experience is a bonus
- Genuine stock sense — you can tell when animals aren't right
- Able to organise your own work and finish jobs properly without supervision
- Reliable, careful with stock, machinery and the property
- Confident with fencing, water, spraying and machinery
- Comfortable with a phone and basic farm records
- Looking for a stable, long-term three-day-a-week position
This role suits an experienced operator who wants regular, well-paid work without a full-time commitment — someone with their own small block, contracting work, or family commitments who'd value three reliable days a week.
What we offer
- Permanent part time, three guaranteed days per week, with additional days available during peak periods (lambing, marking, shearing, summer feeding) by agreement
- Above-award remuneration, negotiable based on experience and capability
- Farm vehicle, quad bike, machinery and tools supplied
- A well-run business with clear systems and a long-term future
- A genuine chance to run the operation, not just take orders
