Technical Forest Services (TFS) | North Coast NSW (Kempsey to Coffs Harbour)
About Us
Technical Forest Services (TFS) is a national forestry services contractor, founded in 2002 and headquartered in Tasmania. We've built our reputation on getting accurate, reliable field data for our clients — no matter what the terrain throws at us. We're now growing our team on the NSW North Coast, and we're looking for people who are ready to build a career in the field, not just take a job.
About The Role
We're after a Field Technician to join our North Coast crew, carrying out forest inventory and mensuration work across hardwood plantation and native forest estates. This is genuine outdoor, hands-on field work — you'll be on your feet all day, working through thick scrub and variable terrain, collecting the technical data that underpins how our clients manage their forests.
This isn't a role for someone chasing a desk job with the occasional site visit. You'll be out in it, day after day, and you'll take real pride in getting the numbers right.
What You'll Be Doing
- Carrying out forest inventory and mensuration fieldwork — measuring, recording and assessing plantation and native forest stands
- Navigating independently through dense bush and difficult terrain to reach and correctly identify plots
- Capturing accurate, complete field data using digital data collection tools
- Following structured reporting processes with consistency and discipline, every plot, every day
- Planning your own daily routes and logistics to work efficiently and safely
- Solving problems on the fly — terrain, weather, access and equipment issues are part of the job,
and we need people who find the practical way through
- Driving 4WD vehicles to and around remote work sites, often on unsealed roads
What We're Looking For
- Physically capable and comfortable outdoors all day — this role involves sustained walking through thick scrub, uneven ground and variable weather
- Solid navigation skills — confident reading a map, using GPS, and finding your way in country without formed tracks
- A genuine commitment to accuracy and discipline in reporting — our clients rely on the data you collect, and we hold ourselves to a high standard
- A practical problem-solver — someone who works through obstacles rather than getting stuck on them
- Good at planning and logistics — able to organise your own day efficiently, manage time in the field, and think ahead
- A valid driver's licence and solid driving experience, including comfort on unsealed and remote roads
- Self-motivated and able to work independently, often solo or in small crews, without close supervision
- Previous experience in forestry, inventory, surveying, agriculture, or a related outdoor field role is highly regarded — but a strong work ethic and the right attitude matter more than a resume line. Training is provided.
What We Offer
- A genuine pathway into the forestry industry, with structured training and development
- The opportunity to be part of building TFS's permanent North Coast crew from the ground up
- Support from an experienced regional team and TFS's broader national network
- A safety-first culture
- Fully equipped for the work: vehicle, PPE and field technology provided
