Position Description

Fully Qualified Heavy Diesel Mechanic

Location: Winton, Queensland Employment Type: Full-time

Position Overview

We are seeking a fully qualified Heavy Diesel Mechanic to join our team in Winton, Queensland. This is a varied, hands-on position involving workshop repairs, roadside assistance, call-out breakdowns and field servicing across rural and remote Western Queensland. Work locations may include cattle properties, national parks, remote roads, construction sites and other regional locations. Some jobs will require overnight travel and working independently in isolated areas.

Key Responsibilities

- Diagnose, service and repair diesel-powered trucks, vehicles, machinery and equipment.
- Perform scheduled servicing and preventative maintenance.
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and air-system faults.
- Carry out engine, transmission, driveline, brake, suspension and cooling-system repairs.
- Attend roadside breakdowns and emergency call-outs.
- Complete repairs and maintenance in the workshop and in field conditions.
- Travel to rural properties, national parks and remote locations as required.
- Undertake overnight and multi-day work from home when necessary.
- Inspect machinery and identify existing or developing faults.
- Test equipment following repairs to ensure it is safe and operating correctly.
- Provide practical repair recommendations and accurately identify required parts.
- Maintain service vehicles, tools and diagnostic equipment.
- Complete job cards, timesheets and parts records accurately.
- Communicate professionally with customers regarding faults,



repairs and maintenance requirements.
- Work independently while also contributing positively to a small team.
- Follow workplace health and safety procedures.
- Maintain a clean, safe and organised workshop and service vehicle.

Qualifications and Experience

The successful applicant must have:
- A recognised trade qualification as a Heavy Diesel Mechanic.
- Experience servicing and repairing trucks, heavy machinery and diesel equipment.
- Strong diagnostic and fault-finding skills.
- Sound knowledge of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
- The ability to work safely and effectively without direct supervision.
- The ability to make practical decisions while working in remote locations.
- A current driver licence.
- Good communication, record-keeping and time-management skills.
- A reliable, responsible and safety-focused attitude.

Desirable Requirements

- HR, HC or MC driver licence.
- Air-conditioning handling licence.
- Auto-electrical or advanced diagnostic experience.
- Experience working on a broad range of trucks, earthmoving equipment, agricultural machinery and four-wheel-drive vehicles.
- Previous experience undertaking roadside, field-service or remote-area work.
- Current first-aid certificate.

Working Conditions





This position includes a combination of workshop, roadside and field-based work. The mechanic may be required to:
- Participate in an after-hours breakdown and call-out roster.
- Travel throughout rural and remote Western Queensland.
- Stay away overnight when completing remote repairs or servicing.
- Work outdoors in hot, dusty and physically demanding conditions.
- Work on cattle properties, national park sites, roadsides and isolated work locations.
- Drive a field-service vehicle over long distances and on unsealed roads.
- Safely lift, carry and use mechanical tools, parts and equipment.
- Work flexible hours when breakdowns or urgent repairs require it.
