Boathouse Coffee
Launceston
We’re looking for an experienced 2IC / Senior Barista to join the team at the Boathouse.
This is a hands-on role for someone who loves hospitality, understands coffee and is ready to take some responsibility for the day-to-day running of a busy café.
We’re not necessarily looking for someone who has already been a manager (though that would be ideal). We’re looking for someone with the right coffee knowledge, initiative and attitude who wants to develop into a leadership role.
About You
Coffee experience is important for this position. We’re looking for more than experience working in a high-volume café environment where coffee recipes and extraction are largely automated. You should have a genuine understanding of espresso extraction and coffee recipes dose, yield, extraction time, dialling in and how changes to these variables affect what’s in the cup.
You don’t need to know everything, but you should have a robust foundation and an interest in continuing to learn.
You’ll also be someone who:
- Has strong espresso and milk-texturing skills
- Can confidently dial in and follow coffee recipes
- Is genuinely customer-focused and enjoys hospitality
- Can remain calm and organised during a busy service
- Is comfortable working independently and making decisions
- Has initiative and doesn’t need to constantly be told what to do
- Can support and give direction to other team members
- Takes pride in cleanliness, organisation and presentation
- Is reliable, punctual and communicates well
The Role
You’ll work closely with the Café Manager and help maintain the standards of the Boathouse when they’re not there.
The hours we are looking for are: 6am-2pm Monday, Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday.
There will be full time hours available for the right candidate.
Making great coffee and looking after customers is a key part of the role, but it also requires seeing the bigger picture of what’s happening in the café.
You’ll help with opening and closing, maintaining coffee and service standards, supporting staff, keeping the café organised, completing daily procedures and dealing with the small problems that inevitably come up during a shift.
One thing that’s particularly important to us is having a busy mindset during quiet periods.
The Boathouse can go from a very busy service to a quiet period quickly. We want someone who naturally uses that time to clean, prep, restock, organise and get ahead rather than waiting for the next customer or for someone to give them a job.
What We Can Offer
This is a great opportunity for someone who is already a strong barista and wants to develop their leadership and café management skills. You’ll have the chance to develop further in:
- Specialty coffee and extraction
- Barista training
- Café operations
- Staff leadership
- Customer experience
- Stock and workflow management
- Seasonal and specialty beverage development
Most importantly, you’ll have genuine responsibility and the opportunity to contribute to how the café operates rather than simply turning up and working a section. If you’re a strong barista who enjoys hospitality, takes initiative and wants to take the next step towards café management, we’d love to hear from you.
