Job reference: 856353
Location: 5600 - WHYALLA
Job status: Long Term Contract
Eligibility: Open to Everyone

Deputy Registrar (ASO3) – Whyalla Magistrates Court – Full time, Monday to Friday – 12 month contract with possibility of extension

- Step into a leadership role in your local justice system
- Full time, Monday to Friday, with the predictable hours the public sector is known for
- Support the Registrar to lead a small, close-knit team that keeps justice accessible in the Upper Spencer Gulf

Lead Your Local Court Registry

The Whyalla Magistrates Court is looking for a Deputy Registrar to help lead its registry team. This is a hands on leadership role for someone who is already a confident administrator and is ready to take responsibility for the people, the workload and the standard of service that comes out of a busy regional courthouse.

You will work alongside the Registrar to make sure that everyone who comes through the door, or picks up the phone, gets the access to justice and the quality of service they are entitled to. When the Registrar is away, you will step up and run the registry.

You do not need to have worked in a court before. What matters is that you can supervise and support a team, make sound decisions, apply rules carefully and consistently, and stay calm and respectful when the people in front of you are having a difficult day.

Why Join Us?

The Courts Administration Authority is an independent statutory authority. We support the courts of South Australia and, through them, the community’s right to a fair and accessible justice system. In a regional registry, that work is visible every day.

Whyalla is a small and collaborative workplace where everyone knows each other and everyone pitches in. As part of CourtSA’s statewide shared workload model, your team also contributes to work generated at other locations, including our busier metropolitan registries. That brings genuine variety to the work, and it means your registry plays a real part in statewide operations rather than working in isolation.

As Deputy Registrar you will also be appointed to exercise statutory and quasi judicial powers under the Magistrates Court Act 1991. It is real responsibility, and it comes with full training and the support of an experienced statewide registry network.

Location Benefits

- Work in your own community, close to home
- Free onsite and nearby parking
- A close-knit regional court team that supports each other
- A public sector career pathway in Whyalla, with connections across the state

A Day in the Life

Your day starts before the doors open, checking what is listed, who is rostered and what needs to be prioritised. You will set the team up for the day, then work alongside them at the counter,

on the phones and in the case management system. You will sign court documents, exercise your delegated powers, and make judgement calls on the matters your Court Officers escalate to you.

You will deal with people at difficult moments in their lives and help them understand a process that can feel overwhelming. You will also handle work allocated from other registries, keep an eye on how the team is tracking, and finish the day making sure the records are accurate and nothing has been left outstanding.

Key Responsibilities

- Supervising and supporting Court Officers, including allocating work, coaching and on the job training
- Organising and prioritising the registry workload so services are delivered accurately and on time
- Exercising statutory and quasi judicial functions as an appointed Deputy Registrar, including signing court documentation
- Providing accurate procedural advice to court users, the legal profession, government agencies and the public
- Resolving enquiries and complaints within delegated authority, and knowing when to escalate
- Maintaining the integrity, accuracy and security of court records
- Performing the duties of the Registrar during periods of absence
- Contributing to improvements in registry practice and to consistency across the state

What You’ll Bring

- Experience supervising or coordinating the work of others, and the confidence to give clear direction
- Sound judgement, and the ability to make decisions and stand behind them
- Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy
- The ability to read, interpret and apply legislation, rules and procedures consistently
- Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to manage conflict and difficult conversations with care
- Discretion and a solid understanding of privacy and confidentiality
- Proficiency with computers and the ability to learn specialised systems
- A community minded approach and genuine interest in public service

What We Offer

- Comprehensive on the job training – no prior court experience required
- A leadership role with real responsibility and delegated authority
- Regular, predictable hours, Monday to Friday
- Supportive, friendly workplace culture
- Pathways for career development across CourtSA Registries and the wider public sector
- Generous leave entitlements and flexible working arrangements

- Salary sacrifice benefits and superannuation fund selection
- Free annual flu vaccinations

Special Conditions

- Appointment is under the Courts Administration Act, 1993. Terms and Conditions of employment are governed by the Public Sector Act, 2009.
- This is a full time position (1.0 FTE) located at the Whyalla Magistrates Court.
- Appointment is dependent upon a current National Police Certificate that the CAA finds satisfactory.
- As a justice agency, the CAA may receive details of spent convictions as part of any Criminal History Screening and use this information in the selection process.
- Appointment as a Deputy Registrar pursuant to the Magistrates Court Act 1991 and/or as a Deputy Sheriff pursuant to the Sheriff’s Act 1978 is required.
- As part of the statewide registry service model, the incumbent may be required to undertake work allocated from, or on behalf of, other registry locations.
- Travel to other courthouses or to circuit locations may be required, which may include driving a motor vehicle and overnight absences.
- Some out of hours work may be required.
