Successful applicants will be a specialist in intensive care medicine holding FCICM. They must have sound clinical knowledge and experience of working in similar intensive care units. They are expected to have excellent communication and leadership skills, and non-clinical and administrative experience required for a large intensive care unit. Applicant must be willing to contribute to the ICS clinical roster, and non-clinical workload of the service as directed by the head of department.
This is a Fixed Term appointment for the period 1 February 2027 to 6 February 2028.
Western Sydney Local Health District is responsible for the provision of health services to the local government area comprised of Auburn, Baulkham Hills, Blacktown, Holroyd, and Parramatta and tertiary care. These services are provided through several hospitals and community-based facilities located strategically across the district.
Western Sydney Local Health District is committed to achieving continuous quality improvement in client services within a Quality Management framework, with a supporting Strategic Plan aimed at the continuous improvement of all facilities. The district has individual facilities located at Westmead, Cumberland, Auburn, Blacktown and Mount Druitt.
Westmead Hospital Intensive Care Service (ICS) is a tertiary care facility, with a throughput of 3200 admissions per annum. The ICS admits critically ill trauma, neurosurgery, cardiac surgery medical and surgical patients.
Westmead ICS operates as a Level 1 Neuro-Trauma facility and serves as the designated cardio-thoracic referral center for adult congenital heart disease. The unit comprises 49 beds distributed across four zones, including a 12-bed specialty zone dedicated to cardio-thoracic patients. The ICU manages a comprehensive case mix of complex medical and surgical patients, Haematology cases, and renal transplant recipients. In addition to standard intensive care services, the unit operates extensive extracorporeal life support programs, including Veno-venous and Veno-arterial ECMO, and provides extracorporeal CPR services for both in-hospital and out-of-hospital cardiac arrest referrals..
The ICS Staff Specialist provides clinical leadership in best practice care to critically ill patients, and in the supervision of junior staff.
Selection Criteria:
1. Possess or be eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia and Fellowship of the college of Intensive Care Medicine as provided for in the Staff Specialists (State) Award.
2. Must have Australian Citizenship or Permanent Australian Residency.
3. A minimum of 1-year post-CICM Fellowship experience as a consultant or post graduate fellow in Intensive Care Medicine, within a tertiary ICU in Australia or Recent Zealand.
4. Demonstrated sound and broad clinical knowledge and experience in Intensive Care Medicine, with capacity for safe, independent consultant-level decision-making.
5. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills,
with demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially within a multidisciplinary team.
6. Demonstrated ability to contribute effectively to the clinical and operational requirements of a busy tertiary Intensive Care Service and integrate positively within an established team.
7. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across specialty and organizational boundaries, with an understanding of the role of Intensive Care within the broader hospital and health service.
8. Demonstrated commitment to clinical governance, quality improvement, evidence-based practice and patient safety.
9. Demonstrated commitment to supervision and teaching of junior medical staff and trainees, including simulation-based education.
10. Demonstrated interest and experience in research, audit and/or service development within Intensive Care Medicine.
Salary and conditions are in accordance with the Staff Specialists (State) Award.
