A leading Australian digital and consumer technology business is looking for three Senior Software Engineers to join a high-performing engineering team responsible for a critical platform supporting large-scale web and mobile experiences.

This is an opportunity to work on a high-throughput GraphQL platform operating at significant scale, with millions of requests each week and billions of operations each month.

n

The team is evolving its architecture from a centralised GraphQL platform towards a more contemporary federated model with team-owned subgraphs. As a Senior Engineer, you'll play a key role in improving reliability, performance, scalability and developer experience while helping shape the future of the platform.

The role

n

You'll work on a Backend-for-Frontend (BFF) and API aggregation layer that connects customer-facing web and mobile applications with multiple backend services.

n

This is a highly hands-on senior engineering role where you'll be expected to:

n

- Build, maintain and evolve production GraphQL services.
n
- Design and develop scalable backend solutions using Node.js and TypeScript.
n
- Own GraphQL concerns including schema design, resolvers, performance, caching and observability.
n
- Diagnose and resolve complex production issues across distributed systems.
n
- Improve platform reliability, resilience, scalability and developer experience.
n
- Contribute to the evolution towards Apollo Federation and team-owned subgraphs.
n
- Work closely with frontend, backend and product teams across the wider technology organisation.
n
- Deploy, operate and troubleshoot production services in AWS.
n
- Identify recurring technical issues and proactively drive broader, systemic improvements.
n




- Mentor engineers and contribute to technical direction as a senior individual contributor.
n

What we're looking for

n

We're looking for a strong Senior Backend, Platform or Software Engineer with genuine experience owning and operating GraphQL in production.

n

You will ideally bring:

n

n
- Strong backend engineering experience with Node.js and TypeScript.
n
- Deep, production-level GraphQL experience, building and operating APIs, rather than simply consuming GraphQL from the frontend.
n
- Experience with Apollo Server and/or Apollo Studio.
n
- Experience with GraphQL schema design, resolvers and downstream service orchestration.
n
- Strong understanding of GraphQL performance, including caching, N+1 issues, latency and throughput.
n
- Experience with observability, tracing, production troubleshooting and reliability.
n
- Experience building or maintaining BFF, API gateway or API aggregation layers.
n
- Strong AWS experience, including deploying and operating production services.
n
- Experience working with high-scale, high-traffic systems.
n
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work across multiple engineering and product teams.
n
- A proactive mindset and genuine sense of ownership.
n

- Apollo Federation, federated GraphQL or subgraph ownership.
n
- Experience decomposing a GraphQL monolith into federated or team-owned schemas.
n
- Docker, ECS and Kubernetes exposure.
n
- Python experience supporting legacy services.
n
- Experience working in large-scale consumer, marketplace, e-commerce or digital product environments.
n
- Experience using AI-assisted engineering tools to improve productivity and code quality.
