Job Description

n Senior Legal Counsel | Growing Global Business | Melbournen

Our client is a growing international business investing significantly in its Australian operations.

n

As part of this growth, the business is looking to appoint a Senior Legal Counsel to take ownership of a broad range of legal matters across its Australian operations.

n

This is an opportunity to step into a highly autonomous role, work closely with senior leadership and help shape how the legal function operates as the business continues to grow.

Why is this a excellent role?n

You will be the senior legal contact for the Australian business, giving you considerably more

n

ownership and influence than you would typically have within a larger established legal team.

n

The role will suit someone who enjoys being close to the commercial decision-making, working directly with senior stakeholders and finding practical solutions rather than simply identifying legal risk.

n

You will also have the support of an experienced international legal team and high-quality external counsel.

How will this role develop your career?n

You will have the opportunity to take genuine ownership of the legal function in Australia and establish the processes and ways of working that will support the business as it grows.

n

The legal function is expected to remain relatively lean, but as the Australian business develops there may be an opportunity to build out additional legal support around you.

n

For someone looking to move towards a Head of Legal or General Counsel position over time, the autonomy, executive exposure and responsibility should provide a strong platform.

Why do lawyers like working in this type of environment?n

The culture is commercial, collaborative and low ego. The business values lawyers who communicate clearly,

make decisions and understand that the legal team's role is to help the business achieve its objectives while managing risk appropriately.

n

You will be trusted to operate independently without being micromanaged, while still having access to experienced lawyers internationally when you need support.

What work will you do?n

The role will be broad and will include:

n

n
- Drafting, reviewing and negotiating a wide range of commercial agreements
n
- Advising on franchising and related regulatory requirements
n
- Providing practical advice on Australian Consumer Law and broader compliance matters
n
- Supporting senior stakeholders on commercial and operational issues
n
- Managing external legal advisers where specialist advice is required
n
- Helping establish legal processes, systems and risk frameworks as the business grows
n
- Advising across a variety of issues that arise within a growing Australian operation
n

What type of person will be successful?n

We are looking for an experienced commercial lawyer who enjoys working autonomously and being closely involved with the business.

n

Ideally, you will have approximately 10+ years' legal experience and a strong background in commercial contracts and general corporate/commercial matters.

n

Experience advising on franchising or the Franchising Code would be highly regarded, although it is not essential for an otherwise strong commercial lawyer.

n

You could currently be working in-house or within a strong corporate/commercial practice and looking to move into a senior in-house position.

n

More important than having worked in a particular industry is your approach. You should be commercially minded, organised, decisive and comfortable prioritising the issues that genuinely matter to the business.
