Head of Regulatory, Policy & Strategy | Sydney, Australia | Data Centres

Our client is a high-growth technology company operating at the intersection of renewable energy, large-scale power infrastructure, and data centre development . As the business scales its Australian footprint, it is investing in a standalone regulatory affairs and policy capability for the first time, a rare chance to build a function from the ground up at a pivotal moment in the energy transition and global data infrastructure build-out.

The Opportunity

Our client is a high-growth technology company operating at the intersection of renewable energy, large-scale power infrastructure, and data centre development . As the business scales its Australian footprint, it is investing in a standalone regulatory affairs and policy capability for the first time, a rare chance to build a function from the ground up at a pivotal moment in the energy transition and global data infrastructure build-out.

The Role

This is a hands-on, builder's role. There is no existing team or playbook to inherit; you will define the strategy, establish the operating model, and grow the function as the business scales.

You will work closely with the General Counsel, Co-Company Secretary, Chief Development Officer, COO, and CEO , acting as the organisation's primary internal voice on regulatory risk, policy positioning, and government relations.

What This Role Will Cover

- Regulatory strategy & government relations : lead policy strategy across federal, state, and territory levels; build direct relationships with government, regulators, and market bodies; represent the company in policy and industry forums.
- Energy market & data centre expertise : deep working knowledge of the NEM, connection and offtake frameworks, and the Capacity Investment Scheme,

plus the regulatory dimensions unique to large-scale data centre development (grid connection, planning approvals, energy procurement, emerging sustainability and data infrastructure policy).
- Policy development & advocacy : lead submissions and consultations, manage industry association relationships, and shape internal positions on key issues alongside legal, technical, and commercial teams.
- Cross-functional partnership : align regulatory strategy with legal risk and governance (GC/Co-Sec), embed regulatory input into project development from the outset (CDO), support operational compliance (COO), and brief the CEO and Board regularly.
- Building the function : establish governance, reporting, and horizon-scanning processes, and build the case for future team growth.

What You'll Bring

- Significant experience in regulatory affairs, public policy, government relations, or strategy, ideally across Australian and international markets.
- Strong knowledge of the energy sector (renewables, power markets, utilities) and/or data centre and digital infrastructure. Strength in one with exposure to the other is highly regarded.
- A track record of building senior relationships with government, regulators, and industry bodies, and shaping policy outcomes.
- Comfort with legal and compliance concepts; a legal, policy, or related qualification is a plus, though this isn't a purely legal role.
- Robust stakeholder management and the credibility to operate confidently with C-suite and Board.

Why This Role

- A genuine seat at the table, with direct access to the CEO, COO, CDO, GC, and Co-Company Secretary.
- True build responsibility over strategy, operating model, and future team shape.
- A front-row seat to the energy transition and the global data infrastructure build-out, and where they intersect.
- Global scope with local impact, at a business where regulatory capability is a strategic priority.
