Join UniSQ’s Hypersonics and Rocketry Group and contribute to innovative research in experimental high-speed flows. Working within the Institute for Space, Defence and Advanced Technologies, you will collaborate across research and industry projects that support advances in hypersonics, propulsion, space componentry and experimental test capability.
Who you are
You are an emerging researcher with a developing profile in experimental fluid dynamics and a passion for turning complex technical challenges into meaningful research outcomes. You work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team, communicate confidently with a range of stakeholders and build constructive relationships with research, funding and industry partners.
What you'll do
You will work across multiple projects that fall under the theme of experimental fluid dynamics.
The first related to abrasive media blasting. For this you will plan and deliver experimental campaigns to experimentally and analytically characterize multi-phase flows (humid air, liquid droplet, particles) relevant to the abrasive media blasting industry. This includes investigations on how the multi-phase flow is accelerated through nozzles to reach super-sonic flows, how the abrasive particles are dispersed within the jet, and how the jet interacts with the workpiece. You will establish diagnostic systems involving pressure, temperature and force measurement, schlieren imaging and high-speed video, then analyse and report the results.
You will also contribute to the enhancement of hypersonic test facilities (including the TUSQ hypersonic wind tunnel), and construction of new propulsion system test infrastructure for ramjet, rotating detonation engines and gas turbine research.
Working with colleagues from the hypersonics group and industry partners, you will help design facility upgrades, develop prototype test articles and validate facility and propulsion-system performance.
Alongside this technical work, you will produce quality research outputs, contribute to funding applications and collaborative projects, develop research partnerships and support honours and higher degree research students.
What will help you succeed
You will hold a doctoral or master’s qualification, or equivalent accreditation and standing, in Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or a relevant discipline. You will bring demonstrated experience or research expertise in:
- Experimental fluid dynamics, including compressible flows
- Diagnostic methods and instrumentation for fluid flow (gases)
- Designing testing apparatus, test articles or facilities
- Planning and executing systematic experimental campaigns
- Team-oriented research that advances knowledge, attracts funding and engages industry
High-level written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills, sound judgement and a willingness to continue building your academic research capabilities will also be important to your success.

Salary: Total remuneration range $137,920 to $163,017 pa (includes salary range of $116,315 to $137,480 pa, employer super contributions of 17% and annual leave loading)
