Are you an engineering student looking for practical experience over the summer?

Burnie City Council is looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Undergraduate Engineer to join our Infrastructure Services team for up to 12 weeks over the summer of 2026/27. Council is open to a Part-time or Full-time opportunity.

This is a great chance to put your university studies into practice and gain hands-on experience in local government engineering, working alongside experienced engineers and technical staff.

What you will be doing

You will contribute to a range of Council projects and activities, with opportunities to gain experience in:

- Engineering investigations and site inspections

- Road, footpath and stormwater infrastructure

- Project design, administration and reporting

- Development assessments and progress inspections

- Infrastructure investigations and problem solving

- Asset management and data collection

- Construction and maintenance activities

- Technical documentation and communication

You will work with engineers, technical officers, contractors, consultants and other Council staff, giving you a broad understanding of how community infrastructure is planned, delivered and maintained.

About you

We are looking for someone who is keen to learn, willing to get involved and interested in applying their engineering knowledge to real-world projects. Ideally, we are seeking a student who has completed three years of their degree and is heading into their final year of study. However,



we are also willing to consider students who are two years into their degree and have the skills and enthusiasm to take on the role.

You will bring:

- An interest in engineering, infrastructure and community-focused projects

- Good written and verbal communication skills

- Sound analytical, numerical and problem-solving skills

- Good organisational skills and the ability to manage tasks within agreed timeframes

- The ability to work effectively as part of a team

- Competence with Microsoft Office, particularly Word and Excel

- A current driver's licence

Knowledge of local government is desirable, but not essential.

This placement will give you the opportunity to develop practical engineering skills, build professional networks and gain insight into potential career pathways in local government and the broader engineering sector.

You will also develop your skills in project management, technical communication and problem solving while gaining an understanding of engineering standards, legislation and Council processes.
