More than drafting — help turn engineering ideas into real products
Are you someone who enjoys seeing a design move from a CAD model on screen to a component being manufactured, assembled, tested and eventually used in the field?
We're looking for aCAD Technicianto join Silentium Defence's Hardware Team and support the development and evolution of our products and systems.
Working alongside our Senior Mechanical Engineer and broader engineering team, you'll create and manage the drawings, models, assemblies and technical data that allow engineering ideas to become manufacturable products.
While CAD and technical drawing will sit at the heart of your role, you won't be limited to your desk.
You'll have opportunities to work with suppliers, support prototypes, investigate manufacturing solutions, contribute to verification activities and potentially support field trials and demonstrations.
The role
You'll become an important custodian of our engineering design information and help ensure that what has been designed can be confidently manufactured, assembled, tested and supported throughout its lifecycle.
On any given week, you might be:
Creating or updating a complex 3D assembly
Producing detailed drawings for a fabrication supplier
Updating a Bill of Materials following a design change
Working with an engineer to develop a new mechanical component
Reviewing manufacturing feedback and updating a design
Managing drawing revisions and engineering configuration data
Researching materials, finishes or alternative manufacturing techniques
Supporting prototype assembly and integration
Helping investigate an issue discovered during testing
Preparing hardware and technical information for a field trial
What you'll bring
We're looking for someone with solid CAD capability and an appreciation for the detail and discipline required in a qualified engineering environment.
You'll ideally have:
Certificate, Diploma or Advanced Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Drafting, Design, CAD, Product Design or a related field
Experience creating professional engineering drawings and 3D CAD models
Strong experience withSolidWorks, Fusion 360 or similar
Experience creating assemblies, manufacturing drawings and Bills of Materials
Knowledge of engineering drawing standards and design documentation
An understanding of revision control, configuration management and engineering change processes
Strong attention to detail
Good problem-solving and organisational skills
The ability to communicate effectively with engineers, technicians and suppliers
Even better if you have experience with
Defence, Aerospace, Electronics or complex technical products
Machining, fabrication, sheet metal or other manufacturing processes
Product lifecycle or engineering data management systems
Mechanical product development
Cable definitions or harness drawings
Verification and validation
Prototype builds or light fabrication
Workshop tools and hands-on assembly activities
Supplier engagement and first article inspections
The kind of person we're looking for
You're someone who notices the small things.
A drawing number being wrong, a revision not matching, an unclear manufacturing detail or an incomplete BOM won't simply be someone else's problem — you'll want to understand it and fix it.
You'll be comfortable taking ownership of engineering data while still working as part of a collaborative team.
You'll enjoy learning how products work, understanding how they're manufactured and finding practical ways to make engineering information clearer, more accurate and easier to use.
Most importantly, you'll take pride in knowing that the work you produce helps engineers, technicians and suppliers successfully build and support complex technology.
Eligibility to obtain and maintain an Australian Defence Security Clearance is desirable.
If you'd like a CAD role where you can combine strong technical drawing skills with product development, manufacturing exposure and hands-on engineering activities, we'd like to hear from you.
