About the role
The Street Trading Officer sits within the Place Activation team and plays an important role in supporting Melbourne's vibrant street life and activation of public spaces.
The Place Activation team supports Melbourne's flourishing public spaces through a creative, place-focused, approach to city transformation. We achieve this through co-designed urban innovation, tactical placemaking activities, and by enabling community led activations.
The function of the position is guided by the Council Plan, Melbourne **** Vision, and Creative Melbourne strategic goals to ensure that the city is vibrant, inclusive, engaging, creative and a city for people.
Working in accordance with place activation initiatives, customer service standards and aregulatory framework , you'll manage and issue permits for a diverse range of place-based activities including outdoor dining, street trading, street gardens, markets, food trucks, busking and street performances.
You'll work closely with businesses, residents, community members and internal stakeholders to help customers navigate the permit process, provide professional advice and ensure activities are delivered in line with relevant policies, procedures and local laws. Beyond day-to-day permitting, you'll also have the opportunity to contribute to broader Place Activation initiatives and projects that help revitalise public spaces, strengthen place identity and create memorable experiences for people who live, work and visit Melbourne.
A little more about the role
Assess public realm activation proposals
Manage and issue a broad range of street trading permits, including reviewing risk management plans and preparing site plans
Deliver high-quality customer service and provide clear, professional advice to businesses, residents and other stakeholders throughout the permit process
Manage permits across their lifecycle, including administration, data management, record keeping and invoicing
Contribute to and participate in Place Activation projects across the municipality, supporting activities such as planning, design, implementation, marketing, permitting, monitoring and evaluation

About you
You are a customer-focused and solutions-oriented professional who enjoys working with people and helping customers navigate processes, requirements and sometimes complex enquiries.
You will actively contribute to a positive, proactive and vibrant workplace culture through open communication, mutual respect, and active participation in team-building and collaborative initiatives.
You communicate clearly and confidently, exercise sound judgement and can balance place activation outcomes and, customer needs with policy and regulatory requirements.
You're comfortable managing competing priorities and enjoy working collaboratively to find practical outcomes.
What your experience might look like
Demonstrated ability to understand and interpret regulations, legislation, local laws, policies and risk management frameworks
Demonstrated experience delivering high-quality customer service and working effectively with a range of internal and external stakeholders
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex information clearly and tactfully
Solid problem-solving, decision-making and conflict resolution skills
Confidence using Microsoft Office and customer relationship management systems; experience with Salesforce and Genesys is highly desirable
