About the Role

We're seeking a Senior Medical Scientist to lead our Automated Chemistry area, overseeing quality, technical excellence and team capability within a high-performing tertiary pathology environment.

Reporting to the Principal Medical Scientist and with the assistance of Pathologists, the Principal Scientist and Automated Chemistry Scientists, you will be responsible for the performance of assays in the Automated area. You will ensure that accurate, high quality and timely results and reports are produced.

Key Responsibilities

Whilst no two days look the same in this role, day-to-day duties may include:

- Oversee the Automated Chemistry section: participating in Quality Control and Assurance programs, whilst reviewing and recording non-conformances

- Lead a small team of scientists and technical staff within the Automated area, assisting with maintaining the team's training, education and competency

- Ensure equipment maintenance, troubleshooting and record keeping is kept according to protocols

- Oversee the usage and performance of the ABL90 blood gas instruments using AQURE, whilst assisting in the training of non-laboratory staff to operate the instrument where required

- Drive continuous improvement through the development and implementation of new and improved methods in line with the quality objectives of Biochemistry

- Maintain NATA-compliant procedures and documentation.

Classifications for this position will range from RZ5 - RZ7 ($127,535 - $148,309 per annum, plus superannuation), with access to generous salary-packaging benefits.

Your Contribution





The preferred candidate will hold the following skills and attributes:

- A Bachelor's degree in Science, Applied Science or equivalent

- Expert knowledge of clinical and laboratory Chemical Pathology, ideally with a minimum of 10 years' experience

- Technical expertise in operating and trouble-shooting a range of general chemistry laboratory instrumentation

- Medical laboratory experience in a tertiary hospital or private pathology laboratory, in a day-to-day management role

- Demonstrated ability to manage a team

- Current, or a willingness to obtain a National Criminal History Check, and NDIS Worker Screening Check

About the Biochemistry Department
The Biochemistry Department is a major section of St Vincent's Pathology,



performing and supporting the results of specialist studies and analysis including molecular biology (PCR), protein electrophoresis, immunochemistry, specific IgE assays, chromatography, immunosuppressant monitoring, breath testing, autoimmune serology, blood gases and automated general biochemical analysis. The department is closely integrated with St Vincent's Pathology Point of Care Testing (POCT) services and is the pathology centre for co-ordination of Clinical Trials and Contract Testing.
