Commercial Solicitor / Legal Counsel – Contract with Potential Permanent Role

We are looking for a practical and commercially minded solicitor to work directly with us across several developing businesses and projects, beginning with the legal establishment of HorsePower Boarding, a new Australian sporting concept.

This is not a traditional law-firm role. We are looking for someone who enjoys taking ownership of matters, solving unusual commercial problems and working directly with the founder to get projects established and moving.

There is approximately 3–6 months of foreseeable legal work across current projects, with the potential for the position to develop into a permanent in-house Legal Counsel role as the businesses grow.

Immediate project – HorsePower Boarding

HorsePower Boarding is a new sporting concept currently being established in Australia. Considerable groundwork has already been completed, including the competition concept, rules, safety framework, operating model, insurance work and early discussions around locations, participants and sponsorship.

The immediate priority is establishing the appropriate legal and commercial framework so the organisation can begin entering sponsorship arrangements and progress toward practice sessions and competitions.

The successful solicitor may be involved in:

- corporate and entity structuring;

- sporting/NFP structure and governance where appropriate;

- intellectual property ownership and protection;

- trademarks and brand protection;

- IP licensing arrangements;

- sponsorship and commercial agreements;

- constitutions and governance documents;

- participant agreements, releases and waivers;

- review of competition rules and safety documentation;

- insurance-related legal review;

- council, event and regulatory matters;

- general commercial contracts;

- employment and contractor matters;

- coordination with specialist tax, IP or other external advisers where required; and

- developing structures capable of supporting future interstate and international expansion.

Other work

Beyond HorsePower Boarding, there is ongoing and upcoming legal work associated with an established plumbing business, a proposed training/apprenticeship operation and another substantial commercial project currently under development.

Further details regarding confidential projects will be provided to suitable candidates.

We expect approximately six months of foreseeable legal work across these projects. If the projects develop as anticipated, there is potential for this to become an ongoing full-time in-house Legal Counsel position.

Who we are looking for

We are interested in speaking with solicitors at different experience levels. The right attitude and commercial approach are particularly important.

We are looking for someone who is:

- admitted to practise in Australia and holds, or is eligible to hold, an appropriate practising certificate;

- commercially minded and practical;

- proactive, responsive and organised;

- comfortable taking ownership of matters from beginning to end;

- able to identify solutions rather than simply identify problems;

- confident dealing directly with business owners and external advisers;

- capable of working independently while recognising when specialist external advice is required; and

- interested in being involved in building new businesses and projects from the ground up.

Experience in corporate/commercial law, contracts, intellectual property, governance, sponsorship, sport/events or related areas would be highly regarded.

We are also open to a capable early-career solicitor where there is a solid commercial mindset and appropriate external senior review can be arranged where necessary.

Working arrangement

The role can be performed remotely and applicants from anywhere in Australia will be considered.

We are flexible regarding the initial arrangement and are open to discussing contract, fixed-term or other suitable arrangements with the right person.

Immediate availability is preferred.

Remuneration will be negotiated based on experience and the proposed working arrangement.

Please apply with your CV and include:

- current practising certificate status;

- years of post-admission experience;

- relevant corporate/commercial experience;

- current availability;

- expected hourly/day rate or salary expectations; and

- a brief explanation of why this type of role interests you.

Direct applicants only – no recruitment agencies.
