About The Role
The role of the intensive care nurse is specialised and collaborative, providing consumer-centred, evidence-based care to critically ill patients with complex and rapidly changing clinical needs. Working within a multidisciplinary team, intensive care nurses use advanced assessment, problem-solving and reasoning skills to provide safe and effective patient care. Intensive care nurses play an integral role in establishing therapeutic relationships with patients and their families, communicating effectively with a wide range of stakeholders and contributing to the ongoing assessment, planning and evaluation of care throughout the patient’s journey.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver safe, high-quality and evidence-based care to patients within the Intensive Care Unit
- Assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care in collaboration with patients, families and the multidisciplinary team
- Maintain effective communication and therapeutic relationships with patients, families and healthcare professionals to support positive patient outcomes
- Contribute to safety, quality improvement,
audits and service initiatives within the Intensive Care Unit
- Maintain accurate patient documentation, professional competence, mandatory training and ongoing continuing professional development
What We Are Looking For
- Registered Nurse with minimum of 2 years acute medical and/or surgical nursing experience
- Previous HDU, ICU and/or Emergency nursing experience desirable
- Strong communicationand interpersonal skills
- Commitment to continuous professional development and evidence-based practice
What The Program Offers
- A structured 12-month program, 64 hours per fortnight, temporary part time commencing January 2027
- Develop advanced clinical knowledge and skills required to care for critically ill patients within the Intensive Care Unit
- Build on your existing acute nursing experience and develop your practice within a up-to-date and well-equipped ICU
- Dedicated clinical support and guidance from Clinical Support Nurses & Educators with onsite assessment of clinical competencies and hurdles

Continued employment in this postgraduate nursing position is contingent upon the successful completion of all local clinical requirements and academic requirements associated with the affiliated University

Barwon Health Intensive Care Unit is a regional tertiary critical care service providing comprehensive care to critically ill adult patients from Geelong and the surrounding areas. As part of University Hospital Geelong, the ICU delivers advanced medical,
surgical and specialty critical care within a modern, multidisciplinary environment, supporting patients with complex and life-threatening conditions while fostering a strong culture of education, research and clinical excellence.
