Senior AI Agent Engineer

Build AI agents that actually do the work.
We're working with an innovative early-stage technology business that is building the next generation of AI-powered automation for a highly regulated Australian industry.
This is not a chatbot role.
You'll be responsible for designing and building production-grade AI agents that automate complex operational processes and interact with real business systems. You'll have genuine ownership across architecture, development, deployment, security, monitoring and ongoing optimisation.
You'll work closely with the Founder and a small technical team, helping shape both the technology and the wider AI strategy.
What you'll be doing
Design and build production AI agents from concept through to deployment
Develop integrations across REST APIs, OAuth, webhooks and third-party platforms
Own architecture and infrastructure decisions across hosted and local environments
Evaluate models, frameworks and platforms based on performance, cost and reliability
Establish testing and evaluation processes for agent quality
Implement monitoring, logging and alerting across AI systems
Manage model and dependency updates without disrupting production
Build secure systems that handle sensitive business and personal information
Identify and mitigate risks such as prompt injection and untrusted tool usage
Guide and mentor a small technical team
Review architecture and code while raising engineering standards
Work directly with senior leadership on AI strategy and technical direction




Assess build versus buy decisions and recommend the right technology for the problem
What we're looking for
You'll be a senior AI engineer who has actually shipped agentic systems into production.
You'll ideally have experience with platforms and frameworks such as:
Claude Agent SDK MCP LangGraph CrewAI n8n Microsoft Agent Framework OpenClaw Comparable agentic platforms
The specific technology stack matters less than your ability to demonstrate that you have built something real and operated it in production.
You'll also bring:
Strong REST API and systems integration experience
Solid understanding of OAuth webhooks rate limiting retries and error handling
Experience making decisions around compute infrastructure and deployment
Strong understanding of AI security and privacy
Knowledge of prompt injection and adversarial risks within agentic systems
Experience with monitoring evaluation testing and version control
Strong documentation and communication skills
Leadership experience within a small technical team
The confidence to challenge technical decisions when you have evidence to support your position
Bonus points for
Experience working within a regulated environment
Exposure to compliance-heavy workflows




Startup or founding team experience
Strong TypeScript and Python skills
Full-stack development experience
Experience deploying up-to-date web applications
Experience working with Australian privacy and data protection requirements
The opportunity
This is a genuine prospect to have a major influence on the direction of an AI product from an early stage.
You'll have direct access to senior leadership and the ability to influence what gets built how it gets built and which technologies are adopted.
You won't be joining a large engineering organisation where your role is limited to one small part of the product. You'll be involved across architecture strategy development deployment and continuous improvement.
The business already has real users and real production workloads so you'll be solving genuine problems from day one.

This is a predominantly office-based position. Collaboration with the Founder and wider technical team is an important part of the role so regular in-person attendance is expected.
