Moxon Industries

Moorebank

Moxon Industries manufactures and overhauls safety-critical components for Australia's passenger rail fleets, as well as supplies into large Infrastructure projects. We are an Australian-owned business with long-standing rail history and an established workshop that has been in Moorebank for 46 years.

Due to a recent structure, we have created a new role and as such are seeking a Production Engineer to support the technical planning and preparation of jobs through our workshop. The role reports to the Production Manager.

About the role

This is a technical support role, not a supervisory one. The Production Manager sets priorities and owns the schedule; you provide the engineering detail that makes the schedule achievable — verifying bills of materials, resolving drawing and specification queries, procuring materials and subcontracted services, and making sure each job package is complete before it reaches the floor.

Our manufacturing methods and routings are determined at the estimating stage. Your starting point is that estimate: review it against the drawings, identify any omissions and ambiguities, and close them out with the estimating department before release.

The role also includes reviewing how we plan and procure, and proposing improvements — including the use of automation and AI tools to reduce manual handling of data.

Key responsibilities

- Bill of materials review: Verify the BOM created at estimate stage against drawings and specifications for completeness, correct material grades, quantities and treatments. Raise and resolve discrepancies with the estimating department.

- Technical document control: Check that drawings, revisions, weld procedures, inspection and test requirements and any customer specifications are current and correctly issued with the job package.

- Procurement: Source, negotiate and purchase materials, consumables and subcontracted services, including cutting, machining, heat treatment, coating and NDT. Confirm supplier certification and documentation requirements are met.

- Production planning:

Plan and sequence jobs across the in-house manufacturing departments in line with the Production Manager's priorities, allowing for capacity, material availability and delivery dates.

- Job readiness: Work with the leading hands in each department to confirm each job is fully planned and the information is clear — drawings, materials, consumables, tooling, fixtures and inspection points — so work is not interrupted once it starts.

- Supply and schedule control: Track long-lead items, identify shortages early, and re-plan with the Production Manager when supply delays or variations occur.

- Technical queries: Act as a first point of reference for the workshop on drawing interpretation, material substitution requests and dimensional or process queries, escalating to engineering where required.

- Non-conformance support: Assist with investigation of non-conformances and rework, including root cause and corrective action input.

- Stakeholder communication: Liaise with customers, suppliers, subcontractors and internal departments on progress, changes and delivery commitments.

- Process improvement: Propose and implement improvements to planning and procurement processes, applying Lean, 5S and Theory of Constraints principles, and developing automation or AI tools where they add value.

- Experience applying Lean,

5S or Theory of Constraints methods in a manufacturing environment.

- Clear written and verbal communication with internal departments, customers and suppliers.

Desirable

- Working knowledge of AS/NZS 1554 (structural steel welding) and ISO 3834 (quality requirements for fusion welding).

- Exposure to a quality system such as ISO 9001, including inspection and test plans and material traceability.

- Familiarity with fabrication, machining, assembly and surface treatment processes.

- Rail or other regulated manufacturing experience.
