About Us

Ashburner Francis is a consulting engineering firm specialising in mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and energy efficiency services for the built environment, with 45 years+ of experience and offices in Brisbane, Toowoomba, Townsville and Darwin.

Our work spans education, health, aged care, commercial and industrial developments, warehousing, defence, stadiums and recreation, renewable energy, airports and aviation. This diversity gives its engineers and designers the opportunity to apply their skills across different project types, scales and technical challenges throughout their careers. Mechanical, electrical and hydraulic engineers all sit in-house and work together, so building services integrate seamlessly. We take a complementary approach, determined to identify and resolve issues before construction begins rather than retro-fitting solutions later.

Many of the team have worked ‘on the tools’. Alongside qualified engineers, former electricians and plumbers bring practical and proactive insights to each project, and local staff in each office understand the distinct climate and site conditions of the regions they serve. Our average tenure across the practice is approximately eight years, one of the longest in the industry.

The Opportunity

This is an opportunity for mid-level hydraulic services professionals to join the Brisbane team and contribute to a broad programme of building services work. You may be a Hydraulic Engineer working toward or holding RPEQ registration, an experienced Hydraulic Designer or Design Drafter, or an Engineering Technician or Associate with strong documentation capability. Depending on your experience, the role will give you the opportunity to:

- Work across the full hydraulic scope — sanitary drainage, water services, stormwater, gas and wet fire services.
- Produce coordinated 3D Revit models and documentation on live projects.

- Take designs from concept through to construction and as-installed documentation.
- Undertake hydraulic calculations and equipment selection appropriate to your background.
- Run clash detection and coordinate with mechanical, electrical, structural and architectural models.
- Maintain Revit families, views, sheets, schedules and drawing standards.
- Review shop drawings and contractor submissions, and respond to RFIs.
- Attend design and coordination meetings, and site inspections where required.
- Work alongside in-house engineers across all three building services disciplines.
- Support graduates and cadets with Revit standards and technique. Take on responsibility aligned with your experience and career goals.

About You

We are interested in speaking with hydraulic engineers, designers, drafters and engineering technicians who have:

- Approximately three to seven years in building hydraulic services.
- Strong Autodesk Revit capability used independently on live projects.
- Working knowledge of AS/NZS 3500, the NCC including the Plumbing Code of Australia, and the Queensland Development Code.
- Familiarity with wet fire services (AS 2419.1, AS 2441) and gas installations (AS/NZS 5601).
- Sound documentation, coordination and problem-solving skills.
- The ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
- Clear communication with engineers, architects and contractors.
- An organised, proactive and solutions-focused approach.
- Unrestricted working rights in Australia.

You may be:
- A Hydraulic Engineer with a four-year engineering degree, working toward or holding RPEQ registration.

- A Hydraulic Designer or Design Drafter ready to take full ownership of a documentation package.
- An Engineering Technician or Associate with an advanced diploma, associate degree, or a plumbing trade background plus design experience.

Experience on health, education, defence or government projects will be highly regarded. Candidates from contractor or design-and-construct backgrounds with solid hydraulic documentation experience are also encouraged to apply.

Why Consider This Role?

This opportunity will allow you to:

- Join an established Queensland practice with 45 years+ of experience.
- Work on a genuinely diverse portfolio across sectors and scales.
- Design in a practice where Revit is the design method, not a documentation afterthought.
- Sit alongside mechanical and electrical engineers in the same office.
- Learn from engineers and designers who came through the trade.
- Develop toward senior design, project ownership or RPEQ registration.
- Access support for continuing professional development and industry membership.
- Work flexibly, with hybrid arrangements by agreement.
- Take on responsibility appropriate to your experience and capability.

Location

The role is based in the Brisbane CBD office, working closely with the practice’s Toowoomba, Townsville and Darwin teams.
