The Role We're looking for an Embedded Linux / Kernel Engineer to strengthen the software platform that runs on Abi and deepen our capability in one of the most foundational parts of the stack. You'll join the team responsible for the platform software that runs on Abi, including firmware and other onboard software. The team works across the hardware/software boundary to make the robot reliable, deployable, and easier to develop, while partnering closely with electrical, autonomy, AI, and product engineering on real-world robotic systems.
You'll own the Linux platform that runs on our Jetson-based robots, from NixOS and kernel configuration through device bring-up and hardware integration.
You'll improve the provisioning and flashing tools that turn a new Jetson into a working robot, make OTA and platform upgrades safer and easier to test, and debug failures across boot, networking and Wi‑Fi, cameras, storage, and other peripherals. You'll also help define the compute and hardware/software interfaces for next-generation robots, and build the diagnostics, testing, and recovery paths needed to keep them reliable in the field. You'll help us make Abi easier to develop, deploy, debug, and scale. That means getting hands‑on with real hardware, tracking down tricky issues across the stack, improving our platform foundations, and building cleaner, more reliable interfaces for the rest of engineering. This is a strong fit for someone who likes working close to the metal, enjoys debugging real systems, and wants ownership in a robotics product where Linux platform work directly affects reliability, manufacturing, deployment, and customer outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
Own and improve the Linux platform that powers Abi, including OS-level behaviour, kernel‑adjacent integration points, hardware interfaces, and software deployment. Investigate and resolve low‑level system issues across boot, provisioning, upgrades, peripherals, networking, storage, and device stability. Support bring‑up and integration of embedded hardware and compute platforms, including working across device trees, drivers, boot configuration, vendor platform constraints,
and the definition of clean interfaces and platform expectations for next-generation robots where required. Improve the robustness and usability of provisioning, flashing, and deployment flows for engineers, manufacturing, and field operations. Work closely with firmware, electrical, autonomy, AI, and product engineering teams to define clean interfaces between hardware and software. Contribute to OS and platform upgrade work, including kernel, JetPack, ROS, and related platform dependencies. Build or improve tooling, automation, logging, and diagnostics that make low‑level issues easier to detect, reproduce, and fix, whether working in virtualised development environments or on physical robot hardware. Support validation and testing of platform changes on real robots, including regression testing and hardware‑in‑the‑loop style workflows where useful. Produce clear technical documentation for setup, deployment, debugging, and recovery procedures so the team can operate more independently. Raise the team's depth in embedded Linux and platform engineering through reviews, pairing, and pragmatic knowledge‑sharing.
