About the Role

The Advocacy and Impact business unit exists to champion, protect and enhance the professional lives of our members. We do this through evidence-based advocacy, practical education, impactful research, sustainability leadership, philanthropic investment and a trusted public voice for the medical profession.
n This role is responsible for contributing to this by assisting in developing, maintaining and delivering medico-legal content to support education of members and changes to health-related legislation, regulation and policy.

The role requires a deep understanding of the medico-legal and health landscape in Australia with proven ability to write and deliver high quality medico-legal content in submissions to external bodies and educational material for members.

n

This unique opportunity would suit someone looking to develop and broaden their legal career outside of a traditional law firm trajectory. Our preference would be a Sydney based candidate, but we are open to location for the right person. The role is permanent, full-time with hybrid working arrangements.

Key Responsibilities

n

Develop and Deliver Medico-Legal Education

n

n
- Research and analyse contemporary medico-legal topics affecting doctors.
n
- Develop educational content across a range of formats, including presentations, webinars, articles, videos, podcasts and online resources.
n
- Deliver engaging presentations and educational sessions to members and stakeholders.
n
- Collaborate with subject matter experts and key stakeholders to produce high quality resources.
n

Support Advocacy and Policy Development

n

n
- Conduct legal, regulatory and policy research on emerging healthcare and medico-legal issues.
n
- Draft submissions, discussion papers, briefing notes, articles and other advocacy materials.
n
- Monitor legislative and regulatory developments impacting medical practitioners.
n

Contribute to Strategic Outcomes

n

- Provide expert legal and medico-legal advice to support organisational priorities.
n
- Support senior leaders, including the Chief Medical Officer and Advocacy leadership team, with research and policy initiatives.
n

About You

n

To succeed in this role, you will have:

n

n
- A minimum of 6-10 years' PAE in medical / health related law - either from a private practice or in-house legal / advisory role. Knowledge lawyers will also be considered if they have specialised or practised in this specialist area of law.
n
- Hold a current unrestricted practising certificate in the relevant jurisdiction, together with a Bachelor of Law (or equivalent).
n
- Demonstrate strong technical legal skills, with an awareness of law reform across medico-legal / health regulatory sector.
n
- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
n
- Excellent research, analysis and problem-solving capability.
n
- Confidence to prepare, deliver and present medico-legal content.
n
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
n
- The ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders.
n
- Prior policy experience would be advantageous, although not essential.
n
- Broader insurance sector experience will also be considered.
