Details: The Head Start Program provides senior secondary school students with the opportunity to undertake an Australian School-based Apprenticeship (ASbA) while completing their ACT Senior Secondary Certificate. Head Start students are provided with personalised career education and mentoring throughout the program, and employers receive coaching and support to ensure students get high quality on-job learning in a safe and secure working environment. Head Start students are carefully matched with employers in occupation areas that align with job demand and/or growth in our region, and the Head Start team works with local employers to strengthen school to industry partnerships.

We also support Vocational Education and Training (VET) in secondary schools, career education, and student transitions, focusing on designing, developing, and implementing improved programs and processes for ACT school communities.

The Head Start Engagement and Coordination Officer will be a key member of the VET in Schools team within the Education Support Office.

You will have the opportunity to work collaboratively with ACT public schools, students and their families, employers, registered training providers, and a range of service providers as required, to support engagement and positive outcomes for students participating in the program. You will also support the VET in Schools team who is responsible for the growth of ASbAs more broadly in ACT schools, through a continuous improvement lens. This may include provision of advice and support to existing ASbAs and VET in Schools programs across ACT public schools.

Requirements of the role

- Prior to commencing this role, a current registration issued under the Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act 2011 is required. For further information on Working with Vulnerable People registration refer to - Apply for or renew a WWVP registration - Access Canberra
- Driver’s licence, class C.

Desirable:
- Demonstrated knowledge of, or the ability to quickly acquire knowledge of Australian School-Based Apprenticeships (ASbAs) in the ACT. This includes an understanding of relevant legislative and regulatory requirements, stakeholder responsibilities, training contract arrangements, and compliance obligations to support the successful participation of students in the Head Start program.
- Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Teams, and the ability to use business systems such as Open Context Manager (TRIM) and databases to support program administration and reporting.

Note:



This is a temporary position available 4 January 2027 until 3 January 2028 with the possibility of extension up to 12 months and/or permanency. A Merit Pool will be established from this selection process and will be used to fill vacancies over the next 12 months. Selection may be based on application and referee reports only. A mixture of office-based and versatile conditions applies to this position.
