About the role

As a Maintenance Assistant, you'll play a vital role in ensuring our shelter, veterinary facilities, and grounds remain safe, operational, and welcoming for animals, staff, volunteers, and visitors. No two days are the same. From carrying out repairs and preventative maintenance to supporting events and facility improvements, you'll be an integral part of keeping our operations running smoothly.

Key responsibilities

- Perform routine maintenance tasks, including basic plumbing and carpentry work

- Organise and coordinate contractors for complex repairs

- Conduct regular inspections to identify and address maintenance issues

- Assist with repairs, improvements, and general facility upkeep

- Demonstrate competency with power tools, garden equipment and manual handling equipment

- Support the setup and pack-down of events and organisational activities

- Coordinate scheduled servicing of maintenance equipment and keep tools and supplies in a clean and organised manner

- Respond promptly to maintenance requests and emergency situations

- Work collaboratively with staff and volunteers to ensure a safe and functional setting

- Help maintain our grounds and facilities to a high standard

About you

- Experience in a maintenance, handyman, groundskeeping, or similar role





- Basic skills and knowledge in plumbing, electrical maintenance, carpentry and general repairs

- Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail
- The ability to work independently and manage competing priorities

- Excellent communication and teamwork skills
- A comprehensive understanding of work, health and safety
- A positive attitude and willingness to help wherever needed

- Confidence around animals, particularly dogs

- Physically and mentally fit
- A genuine passion for animal welfare and alignment with RSPCA ACT's values
