Mole Creek
Maintenance & Horticulture Assistant
Trowunna Wildlife Sanctuary | Mole Creek, Tasmania
Trowunna Wildlife Sanctuary is seeking a practical, reliable and motivated Maintenance & Horticulture Assistant to join our small team in Mole Creek.
This is a diverse, hands-on position combining property maintenance, horticulture, native plant propagation, habitat restoration and general grounds work within a working wildlife sanctuary.
The successful applicant will play an important role in maintaining and improving our grounds, facilities, animal enclosures and natural environment, while contributing directly to Trowunna's ongoing conservation work.
About the Role
No two days will necessarily look the same. You may be repairing fencing or maintaining an animal enclosure one day, and propagating native plants, undertaking revegetation work or maintaining visitor areas the next.
Key responsibilities will include
- General maintenance and repairs across the Sanctuary
- Maintaining buildings, fencing, pathways, visitor facilities and animal enclosures
- Assisting with construction and improvement projects
- Mowing, pruning, planting, mulching and general grounds maintenance
- Propagating and caring for Tasmanian native plants
- Native seed collection, nursery work and revegetation
- Restoration and ongoing management of native forest and wildlife habitat
- Weed and pest management using environmentally responsible methods
- Maintaining tools, machinery, vehicles and equipment
- Assisting with seasonal property requirements, including firewood and water supplies
- Supporting new facilities, enclosure and infrastructure projects
A significant focus of this position is horticulture and habitat restoration, including growing native Tasmanian plants, establishing revegetation areas and helping improve biodiversity and habitat quality throughout the Sanctuary.
About You
We are looking for someone who enjoys practical work, is comfortable working outdoors and can confidently tackle a variety of maintenance and horticultural tasks.
Ideally, you will have experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Maintenance, building, construction or a trade
- Horticulture, landscaping or nursery work
- Conservation and land management
- Native plant propagation and revegetation
- Weed management and environmental land care
- Using hand tools, power tools and grounds-maintenance equipment
You will need to be able to work independently as well as part of a small team, have good practical problem-solving skills and share our commitment to conservation, environmental sustainability, workplace safety and animal welfare.
A current Tasmanian Class C Driver Licence is required.
Qualifications or experience in horticulture, conservation and land management, landscaping, building or a relevant trade will be highly regarded.
Chainsaw qualifications and experience operating machinery such as a bobcat or front-end loader are also desirable.
Employment Details
Location: Trowunna Wildlife Sanctuary, Mole Creek, Tasmania
Employment: Permanent – Part-Time (3 days per week)
Award: Miscellaneous Award 2020
Pay: Award-based remuneration, with the applicable rate dependent on the successful applicant's experience and relevant qualifications.
Why Work at Trowunna?
This is an opportunity to use your practical skills in a role where the work you do has a visible impact.

Trowunna's role is to deliver direct wildlife conservation outcomes through endangered species protection, breeding programs, rewilding strategies and increasing community awareness to inspire action.
