Logan City Council is seeking an experienced and community-focused Park Ranger Operational Lead to deliver community awareness, engagement and local law enforcement programs that support the safe and appropriate use of Council's parks and public spaces.
This is an important frontline leadership role within Council's City Safety and Liveability Branch. You will lead and support a team of Park Rangers, develop operational work programs and coordinate responses to complex issues affecting parks and public spaces. The role regularly works with internal Council teams, Queensland Police, government agencies, community organisations, Councillors and other stakeholders.
About the role:
A key focus of this position is coordinating Council's engagement and operational response to unlawful camping and homelessness in parks space. The role requires a balanced, respectful and considered approach that recognises individual circumstances while responding appropriately to community safety, amenity and local law concerns.
The successful applicant will have regular exposure to people experiencing homelessness and other vulnerable community members, sometimes in complex or challenging circumstances. You will guide officers to engage professionally and respectfully, coordinate with relevant support services and government agencies, assess safety and operational risks, and ensure any regulatory response is lawful, proportionate and consistent with Council policy.
You will also:
- Provide leadership, supervision, mentoring and support to a team of Park Rangers.
- Develop and coordinate proactive patrols, operational activities and community education programs.
- Build effective partnerships to address issues including homelessness, public nuisance, vandalism, graffiti, and local law breaches in parks.
- Investigate alleged breaches of legislation and local laws and, where appropriate, undertake enforcement action.
- Provide specialist advice to management, Councillors and internal and external stakeholders.
- Manage escalated customer matters through mediation, negotiation, sound judgement and practical problem-solving.
- Promote the appropriate use, protection and management of Council parks.
- Support continuous improvement, risk management, workplace health and safety, quality assurance and responsible budget management.
About you:
You will be an experienced and compassionate leader who is comfortable operating in a visible frontline setting. You will understand that achieving sustainable outcomes requires more than enforcement alone and will be capable of balancing community expectations, public safety, individual rights and legislative responsibilities.
To succeed in this role, you will bring:
- Extensive regulatory or law enforcement experience, including investigations, conflict resolution, interviewing, negotiation, evidence preparation and interpretation of legislation.
- Demonstrated experience leading and developing a team in a regulatory or law enforcement environment.
- Strong judgement and the ability to make fair, evidence-based and defensible decisions.
- The ability to engage respectfully with people experiencing homelessness and other vulnerable individuals.
- A sound understanding of staff physical and psychosocial safety and wellbeing when coordinating complex frontline activities.
- Highly developed stakeholder engagement and relationship-management skills.
- Strong written communication skills, including the preparation of reports, procedures and operational work programs.
- Experience identifying and implementing service and process improvements.
- Experience preparing and monitoring operational budgets.
This position may also participate in an established 10/4 roster to support operational continuity, provide leave coverage and/or undertake scheduled surveillance activities.
To be considered for and employed in this position, applicants must satisfactorily complete the following pre-employment screening checks, as applicable:
- Work Rights
- Satisfactory references
- Functional Capacity Evaluation
- Possession of a current "C" class driver's licence (R class is highly regarded)
- Risk Prediction Index
- Vaccinations: Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Tetanus
- Eligible for appointment as an authorised person under relevant legislation
- Certificate IV in Government Investigations and a Certificate IV in Statutory Compliance will be highly regarded.
To be employed in this position applicants must undergo additional employment-related background check/s (other than past employment reference checking) and be assessed as suitable to be able to ethically perform the inherent requirements of this position. This will include:
- National Police History Check
This is an opportunity to lead a dedicated operational team and make a meaningful difference across Logan's parks and public spaces. You will help shape a response that is safe, coordinated and community focused, while supporting officers to manage challenging situations with professionalism, consistency and respect.
If you are a confident operational leader who can bring together engagement, support pathways, safety, education and proportionate enforcement, we encourage you to apply.
