Your Role as Cultural Liaison Officer – Mental Health Multidisciplinary Team
The Cultural Liaison Officer provides culturally safe, community-led support for First Nations, CALD and Pasifika participants within WMQ’s Mental Health Multidisciplinary Team. Working closely with participants, communities, Elders and cultural leaders, the role coordinates cultural support, advocacy and brokerage, strengthens community partnerships, and promotes culturally responsive service delivery across the program. We strongly encourage applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. As cultural leadership, community connection and lived experience are central to this role, preference will be given to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants.
Key responsibilities include:
- Providing culturally responsive support, advocacy and brokerage to First Nations, CALD and Pasifika participants, ensuring services reflect individual cultural needs and preferences.
- Building and maintaining robust relationships with Elders, cultural leaders, community-controlled organisations and other key stakeholders to strengthen community connections and referral pathways.
- Contributing to multidisciplinary assessments, care planning and service delivery to ensure culturally safe, coordinated and person-centred support.
- Promoting cultural safety, trauma-informed practice, recovery and inclusion across all participant interactions and service activities.
- Supporting the development of cultural capability across the team through knowledge sharing, training, resources and stakeholder engagement.
- Ensuring participants and families are actively involved in decisions about their care while maintaining confidentiality, cultural sensitivity and professional standards.
- Maintaining accurate records, support quality improvement activities, and ensure compliance with safeguarding, privacy, workplace health and safety and organisational requirements.

What We’re Looking For
- Strong cultural knowledge and community connections with First Nations, CALD and/or Pasifika communities.
- Experience providing cultural support, advocacy or service navigation for people experiencing mental health and wellbeing challenges.
- Ability to build effective relationships with Elders,
community-controlled organisations and key community stakeholders.
- Experience supporting cultural capability and culturally responsive practice.
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Understanding of social and emotional wellbeing and recovery-oriented approaches.
- Strong communication, interpersonal and record-keeping skills.
A Valuable Addition, Yet Not a Must-Have!
- Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander identity.
- Relevant qualification in mental health, wellbeing, community services or a related field.
- Experience providing cultural support or brokerage.
- Lived or living experience of mental health recovery.
- Experience in funded community or mental health programs.
Essential Requirements
- Proof of COVID-19 vaccination status (or as required by legislation and WMQ policy)
- Relevant probity checks required by legislation and WMQ Limited policy.
- Current Driver’s Licence and willingness to travel for work.
