The Opportunities:

Two fixed term opportunities with the possibility of permanency in the future, which include:

- 18 months (November 2026 to April 2028); and
- two years (start date as early as possible).

Secondment from other agencies for the above opportunities is possible through this process.

The Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER) are seeking experienced environmental professionals to join the Approvals portfolio as a Principal Environmental Officer. This role offers an opportunity to contribute to some of Western Australia's most significant environmental assessment processes and help inform decisions that balance development with environmental protection.

As a Principal Environmental Officer, you will provide high-level scientific and technical advice to support the Environmental Protection Authority's functions under the Environmental Protection Act 1986. The role is responsible for leading and coordinating environmental impact assessments, contributing to the development of environmental policy and strategy, and ensuring assessments are scientifically rigorous, evidence-based and aligned with legislative and policy frameworks.





Working on complex and often high-profile projects, you will investigate, assess and report on the environmental impacts of development proposals and planning schemes. You will engage with industry, government agencies, scientific experts and the broader community to provide clear, practical advice on environmental matters and facilitate informed decision-making.

The successful applicant will bring strong scientific expertise in environmental impact assessment and a demonstrated ability to critically analyse complex information, review technical studies and develop practical solutions to environmental challenges. You will have experience leading environmental assessments, managing competing priorities and delivering high-quality outcomes within demanding timeframes.
