You're the kind of person who can walk into a business and within a few weeks see exactly what's working, what's not, and what needs fixing first. You're not just an accountant. You understand numbers, but you also understand people, operations, and how a business actually makes money. You'll be the Managing Director's right hand, trusted with the kind of responsibility that most finance roles never give you.
You've may have spent years in a bigger, more corporate finance role, doing solid work that got lost somewhere between the approval chain and the next restructure. You're over it. You want to be somewhere your work is actually seen, where a decision doesn't need three meetings and a sign off from someone who's never met a customer.
Or maybe you've had your own business, or spent years running the finance side of one, and you're looking to keep using everything you know somewhere that genuinely values it.
Either way, you're grounded. You're consistent. You take accountability seriously, you don't need a rulebook for every situation because you've got good judgement and you use it. You're comfortable working autonomously, and sometimes being the only person in the office some afternoons and getting on with it. And you're genuinely excited by a challenge, not just tolerant of one.
This is a Finance & Commercial Manager role with a privately owned, food manufacturing and distribution business based in Kogarah, supplying the international aviation catering industry. Think Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad, big name airlines who need consistent, high quality food on board every single day. It's a small, tight knit team, and the goal is +$20 million in turnover by the end of 2027, including a genuine push into export markets.
The owner is an entrepreneur, and in need of someone they can properly hand the finances to.
Not just someone who processes numbers, someone who owns them and is accountable for getting it right.
You'll run the day to day commercial activity; accounting, payroll, AP and AR and all the financial reporting, but this isn't a back office role. You'll run the management meetings, help cost and develop new products and initiatives, and work with the operations team to deliver, protect and improve margins. Your ideas won't just be heard, they'll actually get used. If you see a better way to do something, you'll be backed to go and do it.
You'll need to be confident in MYOB and genuinely great at using Excel.
What does great at Excel mean? Pivot tables, XLOOKUP, linking sheets across complex costing models, this needs to feel natural to you, because pricing here isn't straightforward. The same product can be priced a different way for every national and international port it's shipped to, and getting that wrong isn't a small mistake, it can cost the business a contract worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. This is exactly the kind of accountability that makes the role matter.
There's an HR side to this role too. You'll help onboard new staff, keep on top of the paperwork and processes that come with a growing team, and support the Managing Director through anything trickier, disputes, disciplinary conversations, that sort of thing, with proper guidance from the business's external HR consultancy behind you. You won't be thrown in the deep end on any of it,
but you'll need to be someone who can be trusted with sensitive information and handle it properly.
You won't be micromanaged. You'll be trusted, and you'll be expected to use that trust well. If you're the kind of person who chases down the answer instead of waiting to be told, who says good morning to the delivery driver and means it, and who takes real pride in getting the detail right, you'll fit in here.
Worth being upfront about this part. This is a genuinely entrepreneurial business, not a corporate one, and it doesn't come with a corporate sized pay packet. What it does come with is real autonomy, real trust, and a seat at the table that most bigger companies would never offer someone at this level. If we've got an idea, we do it, there's no committee to convince first.
If you're chasing the biggest number on your payslip, this probably isn't your role. But if you want ownership, variety, and to be the person a business genuinely leans on, the trade off is worth it. Salary sits around $110,000 to $130,000 depending on experience, with a discretionary, profit related bonus once you've proven yourself.
This role is based full time in the Kogarah office (no work from home), with some flexibility around start and finish times for the right person. This business is genuinely growing right now, not just hoping to, and in a year or two you'll be able to look back and say you helped make that happen, that you were part of pushing this business towards its $20 million goal, not just someone who watched it happen from the sidelines. If you've spent years being brilliant somewhere that never quite noticed, this is a chance to be the person a business genuinely can't run without.
