About the Opportunity
Worksforyou is partnering with a skilled services business based in Wagga Wagga to recruit an experienced Assistant Accountant.
This is a permanent role employed directly by our client — Worksforyou is managing the recruitment process on their behalf.
Our client is an established professional services firm operating in the Wagga Wagga region.
They're looking for a reliable, hands-on Assistant Accountant to take ownership of their weekly payroll and accounts receivable cycle, with broader exposure to bookkeeping and ATO compliance work.
This is a key hire for the business, you'll be running the weekly financial operations end-to-end and working closely with the leadership team.
The Role
This is a hands-on accounting role suited to someone who has prior experience running payroll and accounts receivable in a fast-moving, high-volume environment.
Key Responsibilities
Payroll
Process weekly payroll for ******* staff across multiple sites
Manage variable hours, penalty rates, overtime, and weekend loadings (including post-8-hour and weekend rates)
Ensure all workers are paid accurately and on time, with correct entitlements and certifications tracked
Reconcile timesheets and resolve discrepancies with site supervisors
Handle payroll queries from workers and resolve them promptly and empathetically
Accounts Receivable
Raise and manage approximately 50 invoices per week across a diverse client base
Track outstanding invoices, follow up with clients, and maintain an accurate AR ledger
Reconcile client accounts and resolve billing disputes or queries
Support credit control and elevate overdue accounts where needed
Broader Accounting & Compliance
Prepare and lodge ATO BAS (Business Activity Statement) returns accurately and on time
Perform regular bank reconciliations across multiple accounts
Assist with month-end processes, accounts payable, and general ledger maintenance
Support preparation of financial reports and assist the external accountant at year-end
Maintain clean, organised financial records and ensure compliance with ATO requirements
What We're Looking For
Essential
Prior experience in an accounting role managing both payroll and accounts receivable
Experience processing high-volume payroll (weekly pay runs for 200+ staff)
Solid understanding of Australian payroll, including award/penalty rates, entitlements, and superannuation
Experience preparing and lodging BAS statements with the ATO
Confident with bank reconciliations and core bookkeeping
Proficient with accounting software (e.g., Xero, MYOB, or QuickBooks) and spreadsheets
Strong attention to detail and a track record of accurate, timely work
Excellent communication skills — you'll be talking to staff, clients, and the leadership team daily
Desirable
Experience in the professional services industry
A relevant qualification (Certificate IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping, Diploma of Accounting, or working towards a degree/CPA)
Experience handling multi-entity or multi-state payroll
Personal Attributes
Diligent and detail-oriented — accuracy in payroll is non-negotiable
Empathetic and patient when handling payroll queries
Comfortable in a fast-paced environment where priorities can shift quickly
A team player who acts as an extension of the business, not just a back-office function
What's On Offer
A key role in an established skilled services business in Wagga Wagga
Close, collaborative team environment — you'll work directly with leadership
Exposure to the full finance function, not just a narrow slice
Real ownership: you'll run the weekly payroll and AR cycle end-to-end
