Who we are
The Office of the Supervising Scientist (OSS) is a specialist scientific organisation within the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (Commonwealth). We are responsible for protecting the people and environment of the Alligator Rivers Region, including Kakadu National Park, from the effects of uranium mining. We conduct environmental research and monitoring around operating and rehabilitated uranium mining sites, participate in and oversee the regulatory process and developing standards and practices for environmental protection.
Environment & Water Outcomes Delivery ensures the protection of the Alligator Rivers Region, including Kakadu National Park, and the local communities from the effects of uranium mining by undertaking environmental research and monitoring, participating in and overseeing the regulatory process and developing standards and practices for environmental protection.
Our Jabiru Field Station in Jabiru, Kakadu National Park supports the environmental monitoring and research conducted by OSS. A key focus is the delivery of the continuous water quality monitoring program, including data collection and the maintenance of field-based equipment. Atmospheric and biomonitoring programs are also routinely undertaken by the Jabiru Field Station team.
