Euroa - Veterinary and Speller Assistant (Driver)
Reports to: Veterinary & Spelling Manager
Hours: Monday - Friday, 8am - 4pm (Full Time). Part Time or Casual opportunities are available
Location: Euroa, Victoria
The primary focus of this position is to coordinate and safely carry out horse movements across our spelling and training operations, ensuring horses are moved efficiently, safely and with the highest standard of care.
Working closely with the Veterinary & Spelling Manager and Movements team, you will be responsible for moving horses between stables, paddocks and farms, maintaining accurate records and assisting with the day-to-day care of spelling horses.
The role will also involve driving a 6-horse paddock truck, with opportunities to undertake local transport of horses where required.
- Coordinate and carry out internal horse movements
- Safely handle and transport a wide range of horses, including racehorses, yearlings, retired and unbroken horses
- Drive a 6-horse paddock truck and, when competent, tow a 3-horse float
- Assist horses that require education to load and travel safely
- Record horse movements, weights and locations in Prism and other required records
- Assist with spelling duties, including feeding, rugging and unrugging
- Provide basic equine first aid and routine paddock treatments
- Assist with veterinary duties and treatments within your level of competence
- Maintain accurate veterinary records and treatment logs in accordance with the Rules of Racing
- Assist with bandaging, monitoring injuries and other veterinary support duties
- Maintain high standards of horse welfare, safety and cleanliness
- Safely operate vehicles, equipment and tools
- Work collaboratively with the Veterinary, Spelling and Stable teams
We are looking for someone who has:
- A minimum of 2 years' relevant horse industry experience
- Strong equine handling and horsemanship skills
- Experience with racehorses or a similar standard of horse care
- The ability to work confidently both independently and as part of a team
- Good communication skills and the ability to follow instructions
- A strong commitment to horse welfare and workplace safety
- Valuable attention to detail, particularly with records and administration
- A willingness to learn and undertake additional training where required
- Medium Rigid (MR) licence, or willingness to obtain one
- A reliable, adaptable and hardworking attitude
Certificate III in Racing/Animal Care or equivalent experience is desirable.
