About the role

A rare and exciting opportunity has arisen to work as a Lawyer in the Workplace Discrimination and Disputes (WDD) Unit in the Workplace and Education Law Branch of the Department of Education's Legal Division.

The WDD unit advises on and manages discrimination, human rights, employment, occupational health and safety and immigration law matters and other government litigation (eg FOI and privacy).

The Lawyer is to provide specialist technical and strategic legal advice in the areas of law relevant to the WDD Unit in accordance with the department's values and objectives under the supervision of the Principal Lawyer and Managers.

The Lawyer role encompasses a wide range of matters including managing litigation in Commissions, Courts and Tribunals and briefing external firms and sometimes directly briefing barristers as well as providing advice to school principals. The role may undertake some advocacy and representation in the Victorian Equal Prospect and Human Rights Commission, the Australian Human Rights Commission, the Fair Work Commission and the Merit Protection Boards.

The successful candidate will have experience in some or all of these areas of law, be able to provide high quality and fast-paced legal advice both in writing and verbally, and be motivated to work in a team environment and learn about new areas of law, including the work of a government lawyer.
