1st Year Mechanical Plumbing Apprentice – Industrial Technician Pathway

About Steamtech

Steamtech Engineering is an established Australian-owned specialist boiler service and engineering company based in Hallam, Victoria. For more than 50 years, we have provided service, maintenance and engineering support for industrial steam and hot-water boiler systems across Victoria.

Our customers include major food and beverage manufacturers, hospitals and industrial facilities where safety, reliability and quality of workmanship are critical.

We are looking for a motivated 1st Year Mechanical Plumbing Apprentice who wants more than simply completing a trade qualification.

We want to develop the right person into a highly skilled industrial technician.

The opportunity

This is a full-time Mechanical Plumbing apprenticeship with exposure to industrial boilers, steam systems, hot-water systems and associated mechanical plant. You will work alongside registered Mechanical Plumbers, experienced plumbers, senior apprentices and specialist boiler technicians while completing your formal Mechanical Plumbing apprenticeship.

From the beginning, you'll gain practical experience across a wide variety of industrial customer sites and equipment.

Your work will progressively include:

- Industrial steam and hot-water pipework
- Boiler installations, maintenance and annual shutdowns
- Pumps, valves and associated mechanical equipment
- Steam, condensate and hot-water systems
- Pipework fabrication and installation
- Flanged and threaded pipework
- Boiler mountings and associated equipment
- Mechanical maintenance and repairs
- Equipment removal, overhaul and installation
- Workshop preparation and fabrication
- Industrial plant shutdowns
- Fault finding alongside experienced technicians
- Reading drawings, manuals and technical information
- Completing job and service documentation
- Working safely across major industrial customer sites

You'll start with the fundamentals and be given more responsibility as your skills, knowledge and confidence develop.

More than a plumbing apprenticeship

We're looking for someone who wants to become a technician,

not simply obtain a trade certificate. Mechanical Plumbing is intended to be the foundation.

For the right person, Steamtech can provide a longer-term development pathway through:

Mechanical Plumbing Apprenticeship

→ Registered Mechanical Plumber

→ Restricted Electrical Worker’s Licence (REWL)

→ Type B Gasfitting

→ Industrial Boiler Service Technician

Over time, this can lead to working across mechanical systems, boilers, burners, gas equipment, electrical controls, fault finding and industrial automation.

You won't learn all of this in your first year. It's a career pathway for someone who demonstrates the ability, attitude and commitment to keep developing.

Who we're looking for

We are particularly interested in a recent Year 12 graduate or early-career applicant who is genuinely interested in building a technical career.

You should

- Have completed Year 12
- Be mechanically minded and enjoy understanding how things work
- Have a genuine interest in machinery, engineering or technology
- Enjoy practical, hands-on work
- Be willing to learn both mechanical and technical skills
- Be reliable and punctual
- Have a strong work ethic and positive attitude
- Be comfortable working as part of a team
- Be able to communicate professionally with colleagues and customers
- Be willing to listen, learn and accept feedback
- Be comfortable using computers and digital technology
- Take pride in your work
- Be willing to participate in reasonable overtime and planned weekend shutdown work
- Hold a current driver's licence, or be actively progressing towards obtaining one

An interest in subjects or hobbies involving maths, technology, engineering, automotive, electronics, computers, fabrication or mechanical systems would be highly regarded.

Previous trade experience is not required.

We're more interested in your attitude, aptitude and willingness to learn.

What we offer

- Full-time Mechanical Plumbing apprenticeship
- Structured on-the-job training
- Formal apprenticeship training
- Work alongside experienced registered tradespeople
- Exposure to specialist industrial boiler and steam systems
- Variety of customer sites and equipment
- Long-term technical career pathway
- Chance to progress into REWL and Type B gasfitting after completing your trade
- Paid overtime at applicable rates
- Uniform and safety equipment provided
- 38-hour ordinary working week
- Early finish every Friday
- Stable employment with an established specialist business

Our normal working hours are: Monday–Thursday: 7:00am–3:30pm

Friday: 7:00am–1:00pm

Industrial maintenance and shutdown work sometimes needs to be completed outside normal hours, including weekends. This is an established part of our industry and provides apprentices with valuable experience across major maintenance projects.

The person we're hoping to find

You don't need to know anything about industrial boilers before you start. You do need to be curious, motivated and willing to learn.

You may be someone who enjoys working on cars or motorbikes, building computers, electronics, engineering projects, making or repairing things, or simply understanding why equipment works the way it does.

We can teach technical skills.

What we're looking for from you is the attitude to turn up, listen, learn, ask questions, take responsibility and continually improve.

If your goal is simply to get a plumbing qualification, this may not be the right apprenticeship for you.

If you want to build a long-term career and eventually become a multi-skilled industrial technician, we'd like to hear from you.

How to apply

Apply through SEEK with your resume and a short cover letter telling us: Why you want to become a Mechanical Plumber and industrial technician, what interests you about machinery or technology, and why you think you would be a good fit for Steamtech.
