Northern Health offers an exciting opportunity for Registered Nurses to advance their careers through the2027Postgraduate Nursing Program in Perioperative Nursing. This program provides a supportive environment for nurses to develop specialised skills in perioperative care, combining academic learning with hands‑on clinical experience. Participants will gain exposure to a wide range of surgical procedures and patient care settings, supported by expert educators and clinical mentors dedicated to fostering professional growth.

Northern Health is the major provider of acute, maternity, sub-acute, mental health, specialist,communityand home-based services in Melbourne’s rapidly growing outer north.

Services are provided through our six main campuses:

Northern Hospital Epping, Broadmeadows Hospital, Bundoora Centre, Craigieburn and Mernda Community Hospitals, and Kilmore District Hospital. In addition, Mental Health Services are provided at Epping, Broadmeadows, Jacana, Preston, MillParkand Coburg.

The role

Northern Health Surgical Services Division provides care for Melbourne’s Northern community in a wide variety of surgical specialties. Following a recent expansion of services to meet increasing surgical demand, Northern Heath now has fourteen operating suites.

Across three campuses based inEpping,



Broadmeadowsand Kilmore, our surgical services cover general surgery, orthopaedic, plastics, urology, gynaecology, obstetrics, paediatrics, ENT, hepatobiliary, vascular, thoracic, ophthalmology and endoscopy.

About the program

- Northern Health’s Postgraduate Nursing Program in Perioperative Nursing commences in late January 2027.
- The program runs in partnership withDeakin University.
- Applicants must hold an existing permanent contract within thePerioperative Services Divisionat a minimum of0.6 EFT(preferred 0.8 EFT).
- Students will be supported by experiencedClinical Nurse Educators,Clinical Support Nurses, andPerioperative staff.
- This program is offered on afull‑fee‑paying basis; please refer to the respective university websites for details. Students should expect to pay university fees to undertake the program.
- Commonwealth Supported Places may be available at the university’s discretion.

A day in the life of a Perioperative Postgraduate Student:

- Work alongside experienced Scrub/Scout, Anaesthetic, and Recovery Registered Nurses.
- Participate in multidisciplinary team collaboration to deliver protected, high‑quality perioperative care.
- Gain experience in pre‑operative preparation, intra‑operativeassistance, and post‑operative recovery.
- Develop skills in critical thinking, communication, and patient advocacy within a fast‑paced surgical environment.

To be successful in this role you will have

- Minimum of two (2)years acute care Registered Nursing experience,




- Completed Supported Transition to Excellence in Practice (STEP) Perioperative or aminimumoftwelve months (12)experiencein Perioperative, Intraoperative or Anaesthetic nursing,
- Enrolmentin the relevant university program
- Commitment to a twelve-month supported program inclusive of all academic and clinical requirements
- Highly motivated and willingness to learn.
- Ability to work rotating roster including weekends,dayand evening shifts
