About the role

McKay Drilling is seeking an Automation Engineer to join our Innovation Technology team and help develop cutting-edge solutions that improve the safety, productivity, and efficiency of our drilling operations. This is a hands-on role offering the opportunity to work on innovative projects involving industrial automation, AI, telemetry, control systems, and mining technology.

Key responsibilities

- Design, develop, and implement automation solutions for drilling equipment and operational systems.
- Program and maintain PLC, HMI, and software-based control systems.
- Develop applications, scripts, and tools using technologies such as CODESYS, Python, C#, C++, or similar platforms.
- Create and maintain electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, software documentation, and technical manuals.
- Integrate sensors, telemetry systems, industrial PCs, and networked devices into automated systems.
- Support testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and ongoing improvement of automation systems in both workshop and field environments.
- Collaborate with operational teams to identify opportunities for innovation and process improvement.
- Participate in risk assessments, safe work practices, and change management processes associated with automation projects.
- Provide technical support and training to end users and operational personnel.

About you

- Degree or trade qualification in Automation, Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering,



Software Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Experience designing, developing, and supporting industrial automation or control systems.
- Experience with industrial automation software and programming technologies such as CODESYS, Structured Text, Python, C#, C++, or similar technologies.
- Experience with industrial control systems, HMIs, industrial communications, and system integration.
- Ability to create and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical documentation.
- Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Experience with AI, edge computing, telemetry, mining equipment, or related industrial technologies is highly desirable.
- Willingness to travel to operational sites as required for commissioning, troubleshooting, and project support.
