Shire of Mount Magnet

Mount Magnet

Gain experience in one of the most in demand roles in Local Government through one on one mentorship with an industry stalwart.

Build your career. Broaden your expertise. Become our future technical lead.

The Shire of Mount Magnet is offering an exciting opportunity for a Graduate Building Surveyor looking for more than just their first job.

We're seeking an enthusiastic graduate who wants to build a career in Local Government building surveying while also developing expertise in Environmental Health.

Working alongside a highly experienced Building Surveyor and Environmental Health Officer, you'll receive hands-on mentoring, practical experience and professional development across both disciplines, with the opportunity to undertake further study in Environmental Health.

Our goal is simple: we want to invest in the right person, develop their skills and give them the opportunity to eventually take the reins.

About the Role

You'll begin by developing your practical building surveying skills and gaining valuable experience across the Shire's building and regulatory functions.

Under the guidance and mentorship of our experienced Building Surveyor/EHO, you'll progressively develop your knowledge, confidence and professional capability while gaining exposure to the broader Environmental Health function.

Your responsibilities and development will include:

- Assisting with the assessment and processing of building applications, permits and approvals;
- Developing practical knowledge of relevant building legislation, regulations, codes and standards;
- Undertaking building inspections and assisting with compliance matters;
- Providing advice and assistance to applicants, builders, developers and community members;
- Maintaining accurate statutory records, registers and documentation;
- Assisting with building compliance and enforcement activities;
- Working with other Shire departments and external agencies on development and regulatory matters;
- Gaining practical exposure to local government Environmental Health functions;
- Learning about public health inspections, environmental health compliance, food premises, public buildings, wastewater and other regulatory responsibilities;

- Undertaking relevant professional development and further study to build capability in Environmental Health; and
- Progressively taking on greater responsibility as your skills, qualifications and experience develop.

About You This role is designed for someone at the beginning of their professional career, so we aren't looking for decades of experience – we're looking for potential.

You'll be curious, motivated and ready to learn from someone with extensive practical experience in the field.

Ideally, you'll have:

- A completed or recently completed qualification in Building Surveying, or another qualification suitable for the relevant building surveying registration pathway;
- A genuine desire to pursue a career as a Building Surveyor;
- An interest in broadening your career into Environmental Health and a willingness to undertake further relevant study;
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills;
- Good written and verbal communication skills;
- Confidence dealing with customers, contractors, developers and community members;
- Strong attention to detail and an ability to interpret technical information;
- A willingness to learn legislation, regulations and statutory processes;
- Good computer literacy and administrative skills;
- The ability to work independently while being receptive to guidance and mentoring;
- A practical, positive approach to professional development; and
- A current C Class Driver's Licence.

Previous local government experience is not essential. What matters most is that you're motivated to learn, willing to invest in your career development and interested in building a long-term career across both Building Surveying and Environmental Health.

A Career Opportunity, Not Just a Graduate Position

This is a rare opportunity to develop expertise across two complementary Local Government professions while being personally mentored by an experienced practitioner.

You'll have the opportunity to:

- Gain the practical experience required to progress your Building Surveying career;
- Work toward the appropriate level of Building Surveyor registration;
- Receive one-on-one mentoring and practical professional development;
- Gain hands-on exposure across a broad range of building and regulatory matters;
- Undertake fully supported further study and development in Environmental Health;
- Build experience across both Building Surveying and Environmental Health in a regional local government environment; and
- Progress toward taking greater responsibility for the Shire's Building and Environmental Health functions as your experience and qualifications grow.
- The Shire is looking for someone we can invest in for the long term.

Why Mount Magnet? Mount Magnet offers graduates something that's increasingly difficult to find early in their careers – the opportunity to gain broad, genuine hands-on experience rather than being limited to one small part of a larger department.

You'll work directly with an experienced practitioner, see projects from beginning to end, work closely with the community and develop an understanding of the full scope of local government Building and Environmental Health services.

You'll become part of a welcoming, close-knit community in the heart of Western Australia's Murchison region while building professional experience that can shape the rest of your career.

Heavily subsidised Shire accommodation will be available to the successful applicant, making the move to Mount Magnet easier and providing an excellent opportunity for a graduate looking to establish themselves in regional Western Australia.

How to Apply

If you're a Building Surveying graduate looking for a role where you can learn, grow and build a genuinely diverse professional career, we'd love to hear from you.

Applicants should submit a cover letter and current resume outlining their qualifications, experience and why this career pathway interests them.

For further information about the position, please contact the Shire of Mount Magnet.

Applications close Friday, 25 September 2026.
