Remuneration: Band 6 salary from $104,133.36 per annum (pro rata) plus superannuation
Location: Hoppers Crossing based with potential for a hybrid work arrangement. This role may be required to work at other sites across Wyndham City to meet operational and business requirements.
About the role
Wyndham City Youth Services is seeking a qualified Children’s Counsellor to provide intake, assessment, confidential generalist counselling and referral services to children aged 8–11 years and their families through a place-based service delivery model.
The role primarily focuses on one-on-one counselling with children, working with families and relevant professionals to understand individual needs, develop appropriate support strategies and strengthen family relationships.
Alongside your counselling work, you will share specialist advice and resources with colleagues and stakeholders to support best practice when working with children. Depending on service needs, there may also be opportunities to support counselling students in collaboration with senior staff, contribute to professional networks and child and family mental health and wellbeing projects, and assist with staff and stakeholder training.
You will have access to career development and external clinical supervision.
This is a permanent part time position as a job share arrangement, working 19 hours per week. Tuesday will be an onsite working day with a preference for Thursday and Friday as the other working days; however, the days of work can be discussed and agreed with the successful candidate and may be subject to change due to service needs, by mutual agreement.
What your day will look like
- Provide intake, assessment, individual counselling and referrals for children and their families.
- Work with children and families to strengthen relationships and develop support strategies in consultation with relevant professionals.
- Provide specialist advice and resources to Youth Services colleagues to support best practice when working with children.
- Maintain accurate and confidential case notes in accordance with relevant legislation, Council policies and professional standards.
- Contribute to quality assurance and continuous improvement across the Youth Support Team and Youth Services.
- Build and maintain partnerships with local schools, community organisations, youth agencies and community centres to support positive outcomes for children.
- Apply relevant counselling theories and frameworks to deliver evidence-based and ethical practice.
- Work collaboratively within the counselling team, contributing to day-to-day service operations and shared team responsibilities appropriate to the role.
What you will bring
- A degree in Psychology, Social Work or Counselling.
- Current membership or registration with the relevant professional association or regulatory body for your discipline. Preferred credentials include ACA Level 3 or 4 registration, PACFA registration as a Registered Clinical Counsellor or Registered Clinical Psychotherapist, or general registration as a psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia through Aphra. (These are desirable credentials rather than additional essential requirements; applicants from all three disciplines who meet the PD’s qualification and membership/registration requirements are welcome to apply).
- Demonstrated experience providing counselling independently to children and families, including assessing individual needs, developing appropriate strategies and working collaboratively with families and relevant professionals.
- A sound understanding of counselling theories and frameworks, with demonstrated ability to apply evidence-based approaches appropriate to children’s developmental needs.
- Experience developing, delivering and evaluating programs and services.
- Experience developing and facilitating presentations and training for community members, stakeholders and staff.
- Strong consultation and communication skills, including experience advising colleagues and external stakeholders on child and family wellbeing.
- The ability to manage your workload, maintain accurate records and work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- A current Working with Children Check and driver’s licence.
- First Aid Level 2, or the ability to obtain this within three months of commencement.
Appointment is subject to a satisfactory police check. If you progress beyond the interview stage, additional pre-employment screening may include a medical assessment, qualification verification and an Australian work rights check.
