Bega Garnbirringu is a leading Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation providing culturally protected, holistic and accessible health and wellbeing services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout the Goldfields region. Our Social & Emotional Wellbeing (SEWB) team works collaboratively with clients, families, community members and other health and support services to promote positive social and emotional wellbeing outcomes.

About the Role

We are seeking a compassionate, experienced and culturally responsive Female Counsellor to join our Social & Emotional Wellbeing (SEWB) team. Reporting directly to the SEWB Clinical Lead, the Counsellor will provide high-quality counselling and social and emotional wellbeing support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients throughout the Goldfields region.

The Counsellor will work as part of a multidisciplinary team and collaboratively with other Bega Garnbirringu programs to support clients experiencing a wide range of social, emotional and mental health concerns.

These may include grief and loss, depression, domestic and family violence, family and relationship matters, and other issues impacting social and emotional wellbeing.

The successful applicant will provide culturally appropriate, trauma-informed and client-centred support and contribute to positive outcomes for Aboriginal individuals, families and communities.

Outreach travel, including overnight stays, will be required for this position.

Key Responsibilities

- Provide culturally safe, professional counselling and social and emotional wellbeing services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients.
- Undertake client assessments and develop appropriate care, support and treatment plans.
- Provide counselling and therapeutic interventions based on individual client needs.
- Support clients experiencing grief and loss, depression, domestic and family violence, family and relationship issues and other social and emotional wellbeing concerns.
- Provide appropriate case management, referral and follow-up services.




- Work collaboratively as part of the SEWB multidisciplinary team.
- Develop effective working relationships with internal programs and external service providers.
- Participate in case discussions, multidisciplinary meetings and clinical reviews as required.
- Maintain accurate, confidential and timely client records and documentation.
- Prepare reports and contribute to data collection and service reporting requirements.
- Support culturally appropriate and trauma-informed approaches to service delivery.
- Identify and respond appropriately to client risk and support appropriate referral and escalation pathways.
- Participate in community engagement and outreach activities.
- Undertake regional outreach travel, including overnight stays, as required.
- Contribute to the development and review of relevant policies, procedures and service improvement initiatives.
- Maintain professional standards, confidentiality and compliance with Bega Garnbirringu policies and procedures.

Essential Criteria

Applicants must have:

- A relevant tertiary qualification in Social Work, Counselling, Mental Health or Psychology, and/or appropriate professional registration in Western Australia.
- Minimum three years' experience working in mental health and/or alcohol and other drug settings.
- Demonstrated knowledge of current issues, standards and trends relating to the delivery of mental health and Social & Emotional Wellbeing services to Aboriginal people.
- Demonstrated assessment, case management and treatment skills, with the ability to provide appropriate client-centred support.
- Highly developed interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to build respectful and effective relationships with clients, staff and key stakeholders.
- Highly developed written and verbal communication skills, including report writing, policy development and data collection.
- Strong organisational and time management skills, including the ability to manage competing priorities, maintain attention to detail and meet deadlines.

Applicants must also have:

- Ability and willingness to travel and stay overnight as required.
- Current WA C Class Driver's Licence.
- Valid Working with Children Check (WA).




- National Criminal History Check / Police Clearance valid within the last three months.
- Current CPR Certificate.

Desirable Criteria

- Membership with the Australian Counselling Association (ACA) or equivalent professional body.
- Experience working within an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation or Aboriginal health setting.
- Experience providing counselling services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
- Experience working with clients affected by domestic and family violence, grief and loss, trauma, depression or alcohol and other drug issues.
- Experience working within a multidisciplinary health or community services team.
- Knowledge of culturally appropriate and trauma-informed counselling approaches.
- Experience providing outreach or community-based counselling services.
- Proficient computer knowledge and skills, including experience with electronic client management systems.
