About the role

We're looking for a mechanical design engineer who can independently deliver design, drafting, scanning, and project support work, and own it end-to-end. This is a fully accountable role. You'll take assigned tasks from initiation through completion, make routine and moderate-complexity decisions within approved standards, and deliver accurate, manufacturable outputs to agreed time, quality, and commercial requirements.

You'll be Bundaberg-based, with purposeful travel for scanning, data capture, and production support — photos, measurements, sketches, and scan-based interpretation that feed modelling and drafting.

Key responsibilities

- Developing, checking, and revising 2D drawings, 3D models, assemblies, bills of materials, and supporting documentation for custom and standard exhaust, thermal, and acoustic products.
- Applying sound engineering judgement to layout, interfaces, thermal movement, vibration, serviceability, manufacturability, and the installation realities relevant to the job.
- Taking full ownership of assigned work — defining the required steps, commencing promptly, and progressing end-to-end using available data, precedent designs, and documented assumptions rather than waiting for perfect information.
- Planning and performing data capture, and converting field and scan data into usable engineering inputs — identifying inconsistencies, uncertainty, and dimensional risks before release.
- Coordinating directly with sales, operations, production, procurement, service, and site contacts to secure inputs, confirm constraints, and resolve issues affecting design progress.

- Supporting project delivery through design planning, action tracking, procurement input, manufacturing clarifications, and installation support within assigned scope.
- Maintaining disciplined document control through PDM (SolidWorks) revision management, BOMs, assumptions, and design records — kept clear, traceable, and auditable across Aletek's design workplace.

About you

- Degree or diploma in mechanical engineering, design, drafting, or a related discipline, with practical experience using 2D and 3D CAD in a manufacturing or heavy industry environment.
- Design and drafting experience in heavy industry, mobile equipment, exhaust/thermal systems, or comparable engineered products.
- Working knowledge of SolidWorks (or equivalent 3D CAD), with sound 2D drawing production, checking, and revision control.
- A working grasp of design for manufacture, tolerancing, revision control, and relevant product considerations — thermal expansion, vibration, corrosion, and serviceability — in an ISO-aligned environment.
- A demonstrated ownership mindset — you take assigned work from definition to completion without needing to be managed, and you escalate with recommendations, not just problems.

- The ability to interpret specifications, site information, scans, and commercial requirements, and to use Microsoft 365 and engineering systems effectively for communication and record keeping.
- Clear written English — you'll be coordinating with a global team, so precision matters.
- Comfortable with a Brisbane base and purposeful travel for scanning, site, and production support.

Benefits

- A fully accountable engineering role with real ownership of your work and its outcomes.
- Genuinely varied work — design, drafting, scanning and reverse engineering, and project support — with the chance to build specialty depth as a subject matter expert in a product or technical area.
- Bespoke, technically interesting work for major resource companies across exhaust, thermal, and acoustic systems.
- A clear development path toward senior design engineer, project coordination, or SME-level technical specialisation.
- Competitive salary commensurate with experience.
- All travel and accommodation costs covered, with purposeful, not reactive travel.
- A direct line to the Global Head of Engineering — your work matters and is seen.
