About us:

Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service covers an area of 142,900 square kilometres. We go as far as Tully in the south, Cow Bay in the north and Croydon in the west.

The outer western region of our service includes extremely remote communities. Cairns Hospital is the only major referral hospital in Far North Queensland and also provides care for people from Cape York and the Torres Strait.

The Nursing and Midwifery Staffing Unit (NMSU), assists Cairns Hospital, Gordonvale Hospital and any outlier wards (e.g. Oregon Street) to backfill emergent leave and roster deficits, by employing and managing permanent and casual employees. We function with the philosophy of ensuring the hospital is staffed safely, with the correct number of registered and unregistered nursing staff, as well as ensuring that these employees also have the correct skills and training to support the hospital.





It is the expectation that permanent and temporary staff can independently attend any location that they are rostered to which may include Cairns Hospital, Gordonvale Hospital and any outlier wards (e.g. Oregon Street).

About your role:

- Implementation of risk management and care plans.
- Routine and complex medication management and administration.
- Complex wound care.
- Pre and post procedural care.
- Phlebotomy, cannulation and IV management.
- Recognising and responding to deteriorating patients.
