Ideal First Move from Business Services | Commercial Exposure | Customer-Facing Role
Are you a Business Services Accountant considering a move from public practice into commerce?
This is an excellent opportunity to take the accounting and advisory skills you've developed in practice and apply them within a commercial environment, while gaining broader exposure to business operations and decision-making.
Working as part of an established finance team, you will be responsible for financial accounting and reporting across a portfolio of operations. You'll review work prepared by an offshore accounting team, analyse financial performance and work directly with operational stakeholders and customers.
Importantly, this isn't a role where you'll simply sit behind a desk producing accounts. You'll develop a strong understanding of the businesses you support, build relationships with stakeholders and have the opportunity to travel interstate to meet customers and better understand their operations.
What You'll Be Doing
Your responsibilities will include:
- Review accounting work completed by the offshore finance team
- Review and analyse monthly Profit & Loss and Balance Sheet accounts
- Complete balance sheet reconciliations and investigate discrepancies
- Prepare and review journals, accruals and prepayments
- Assist with month-end reporting and ensure the integrity of financial information
- Prepare and review GST, BAS and IAS requirements
- Investigate financial results, variances and unusual transactions
- Work closely with operational and commercial stakeholders
- Build relationships with customers and provide accounting and financial support
- Assist with budgeting, forecasting and financial analysis
- Support year-end reporting and external audit requirements
- Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and controls
- Travel interstate periodically to visit customers and build stronger commercial relationships
About You
This role would particularly suit someone currently working in Business Services or Business Advisory who is keen to make the transition into a commercial accounting position.
You will ideally have
- Experience within an Australian accounting practice
- Strong preparation and/or review experience across financial statements
- Good understanding of P&L; and Balance Sheet accounts
- Experience with GST, BAS and IAS
- Solid reconciliation and analytical skills
- Confidence reviewing work and identifying errors or inconsistencies
- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills
- A genuine interest in understanding how businesses operate
- The confidence to develop relationships with non-finance stakeholders and customers
- CA or CPA qualification, or currently working towards completion
Why Make the Move?
If you've been considering leaving public practice but want to ensure your next role provides real commercial exposure, this is an excellent opportunity. You'll be able to use the technical skills you've already developed while gaining experience in commercial analysis, stakeholder management, operational finance and customer engagement.
The variety of the position, combined with interstate customer visits, means you'll gain exposure well beyond traditional month-end accounting.
For an ambitious Business Services Accountant, this could be the ideal opportunity to make the move into commerce and build the next stage of your career.
