We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated and experienced Financial Counsellor to support individuals and families who are experiencing, or are at risk of experiencing, financial hardship to build their financial stability and resilience.
This Financial Counsellor Role is funded via our partnership in the Financial Wellbeing Collective to provide Outreach services to multiple Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCO) partners. The role is suited to someone who enjoys working relationally and flexibly with partnering organisations, Elders, Community Leaders and community members to deliver culturally safe, responsive and accessible services.
You will be confident working with people, communicating with patience and respect, and providing a positive experience for every person who engages with Midlas.
This is a full-time role to 30 September 2027 with possibility of extension; job-sharing or part-time may be considered for the right candidate depending on Midlas’ ability to staff required hours of the position.
About Us The Midland Information Debt and Legal Advocacy Service (Midlas) is a not-for-profit Community Legal Centre with offices in Midland and Ellenbrook that supports clients and community with legal services, disability advocacy, financial wellbeing, tenancy advocacy and community engagement programs.
About the role The role will include the following duties but not limited to:
- Work alongside ACCO staff, Elders and Community Leaders to plan and deliver outreach in a culturally safe, responsive and flexible way.
- Contribute to the development and strengthening of partnerships between Midlas, ACCOs and the FWC, including feedback that supports continuous improvement and responsive service delivery.
- Provide high-quality, holistic, client-centred financial counselling and advocacy for people experiencing financial difficulty, with a particular focus on First Nations clients, families, carers and kin accessing services through ACCO outreach.
- Provide one-to-one support, financial assessment, goal-focused casework and advocacy that builds financial capability and resilience.
- Provide culturally appropriate community education and information activities in partnership with ACCOs.

Required Education/Licences/Certificates
- Hold a Diploma of Community Services - Financial Counselling
- Be a member/eligible to be a member of the Financial Counsellors Association of WA
- Current unrestricted driver’s licence and access to a reliable vehicle
- Possession of current satisfactory National Police clearance certificate (no older than 3 months from the issue date) and ongoing renewal every 2 years at employee’s expense
- Possession of Working with Children Check
Relevant Experience, Skills, Knowledge & Personal Attributes
- Experience in client assessments, casework management, consumer advocacy and the ability to maintain records and statistics
- Sound understanding of the social issues facing financially disadvantaged clients and their families
- Knowledge of the relevant legislation and information pertaining to financial issues including current debt practices, bankruptcy legislation and credit codes
- Demonstrated ability to engage in financial assessment, financial counselling, advocacy and negotiation on behalf of clients.
- Demonstrated ability to build respectful, trusting and collaborative relationships with Aboriginal people, communities and Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations.
- Ability to work relationally and flexibly in an outreach environment, recognising the priorities, strengths and community knowledge of ACCO partners
- Experience preparing and presenting community education and raising awareness of relevant issues.
- Demonstrated efficiency in time management, planning and organizational skills
- Exceptional interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated ability to work unsupervised as well as an effective team player with a positive can-do attitude
- Proficient in the use of MS Office and client database management systems
- Ability to work with flexible schedule in response to business requirements
