Who you are

You are an experienced health and safety professional with relevant qualifications in safety, science, chemistry, occupational hygiene or a related discipline, and extensive experience managing hazardous chemicals, dangerous goods, medicines, poisons and regulated substances within complex organisations. With strong knowledge of legislative and regulatory requirements, you confidently provide specialist advice, resolve complex compliance and risk-management challenges, and translate technical requirements into practical solutions. A collaborative and trusted partner, you build effective relationships across diverse stakeholder groups, provide high-quality advice and reporting

What you'll do In this university-wide role, you will lead the development and continual improvement of frameworks, programs and governance arrangements for hazardous chemicals, dangerous goods, medicines, poisons and regulated substances, ensuring compliance with legislative and regulatory requirements. As the University’s Regulated Substance Manager and subject matter expert, you will provide specialist advice on the safe management of regulated substances, partner with stakeholders to strengthen the Work Health and Safety Management System, and drive effective risk management, compliance and continuous improvement across teaching, research and operational environments.

Your responsibilities will include

- Developing and reviewing policies, procedures, standards, training programs, assurance activities and supporting resources.
- Monitoring legislative, regulatory and sector developments and advising the University on emerging obligations, risks and opportunities.
- Leading complex inspections, audits, licensing activities, investigations, hazard-identification processes, risk assessments and assurance programs.
- Determining appropriate courses of action and monitoring the effectiveness of corrective and preventive measures.
- Leading cross-university engagement to develop practical and sustainable approaches to chemical and regulated-substance risk.
- Representing Health,



Safety and Wellbeing on relevant governance and external forums.
- Preparing reports, recommendations and briefings for governance committees and senior leaders.
- Identifying opportunities to build organisational capability, strengthen safety culture and improve health and safety outcomes.

What will help you succeed To succeed in this role, you will have:

- Relevant tertiary qualifications in safety, science, chemistry, occupational hygiene or another relevant discipline.
- Extensive experience providing specialist advice and technical support concerning hazardous chemicals, dangerous goods, medicines, poisons and regulated substances in a large, complex organisation.
- Detailed knowledge of relevant legislation, standards and regulatory frameworks.
- The capacity to exercise substantial independent judgement and resolve complex or sensitive compliance and risk-management issues.
- Demonstrated experience developing and implementing strategic programs, frameworks and initiatives that improve compliance, safety performance and organisational outcomes.
- Highly developed stakeholder-engagement, influencing and relationship-management skills.
- The ability to prepare high-quality reports, recommendations and professional advice.
- A collaborative approach that builds trust and contributes positively to organisational culture.

Salary: Total remuneration range $138,489 to $159,027 pa (includes salary range of $116,794 to $134,115 pa, employer super contributions of 17% and annual leave loading)
