Belmont
Hospital is seeking Health and Security Assistants (HSAs) to join our supportive, team-focused service. This is a hands-on frontline role where you will play an important part in maintaining a safe and welcoming environment for patients, visitors and staff.
No two shifts are necessarily the same. You’ll work across different areas of the hospital, respond to changing priorities and collaborate closely with clinical and support teams.
About The Role
As a Health and Security Assistant, you will provide frontline safety, security and operational support across Belmont Hospital.
Your Responsibilities Will Include
- Responding to Code Black, duress and other emergency incidents.
- Supporting the Emergency Department and clinical teams when required.
- Conducting security patrols and maintaining a visible presence across the hospital.
- Monitoring access to restricted areas and undertaking access-control activities.
- Assisting with patient movement and transfers.
- Supporting clinical staff with patients who may present behavioural or safety risks.
- Completing security, safety and equipment checks.
- Responding to emergencies and rapidly changing situations.
- Documenting incidents and activities accurately.
- Identifying, communicating and escalating risks appropriately.
- Working collaboratively with nursing staff, medical teams, Wardspersons, hospital management and other support services.
The HSA service operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including morning, afternoon and night shifts, weekends and public holidays. This is a varied role suited to someone who enjoys being active, working with people and making a direct contribution to the protected and effective operation of a hospital.
About Our Team
You’ll join a practical, supportive and team-focused HSA team where communication, reliability and professionalism are highly valued.
HSAs work closely with a wide range of clinical, operational and support services. We look out for one another, communicate openly and step in to support our colleagues when assistance is needed — particularly during emergency or high-risk situations.
We are continuing to build a culture centred on accountability, consistency and continuous improvement. Team members are encouraged to identify risks, raise concerns, contribute ideas and participate in training and service improvements.
About You

- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- The ability to remain calm and composed under pressure.
- Valuable situational awareness and sound judgement.
- The ability to recognise, communicate and appropriately escalate risks.
- A respectful and professional approach when dealing with patients, visitors and colleagues.
- The ability to manage conflict, aggression and challenging situations appropriately.
- A strong commitment to teamwork.
- The ability to follow reasonable directions, policies and established procedures.
- A willingness to learn, accept feedback and continually develop your skills.

More than traditional security Working as an HSA in a hospital environment is different from working in many traditional security settings.
Communication, respect and de-escalation are central to the role. Patient dignity, safety and wellbeing must remain at the forefront of decision-making, while also ensuring the safety of staff, visitors and the broader hospital community.
You don't need to know everything on your first day. Technical skills such as hospital-specific procedures, Code Black response, CCTV and access-control systems, duress equipment, incident reporting and local operating procedures can be developed through training and experience.
What matters most is your attitude, integrity, judgement, professionalism and willingness to support others when it matters.
Training and support
You'll receive a structured orientation and comprehensive on-the-job training to help you become confident in the role.
Your Initial Orientation Will Include
- Familiarisation with Belmont Hospital, the Emergency Department and key clinical areas.
- Hospital security procedures and emergency response arrangements.
- Code Black and duress response processes.
- Communication and escalation pathways.
- Patient movement and safety requirements.
- Incident reporting.
- Access control and CCTV systems.
- Relevant security systems and local operating procedures.
New staff will work alongside experienced HSAs and Security staff, providing practical experience and support before they are expected to work independently. Ongoing education and development will include areas such as de-escalation, occupational violence prevention, emergency response, work health and safety, manual handling, patient safety and security procedures.
You may also have opportunities to participate in scenario-based training, emergency exercises, refresher training and service improvement activities.
