Our client, a leading payment technology provider, invites experienced Java engineers to join their team as a Java Lead Software Engineer. In this pivotal role, you will lead backend engineering efforts across a high-scale payment gateway, responsible for authorising and settling card payments with zero downtime and exceptional reliability.

Key Responsibilities

- Lead design, development, and deployment of Java microservices handling payment authorisation and processing at scale.
- Work across both the modern payment gateway and legacy platform, including feature migration and traffic transition.
- Own the software lifecycle end-to-end, from planning and coding to testing, code review, and release.
- Set engineering standards by reviewing code and guiding team members.
- Leverage AI-assisted development tools (such as Claude Code CLI) to enhance coding, refactoring, test coverage, and troubleshooting activities.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including product managers, technical program managers, and test engineers to align technical and delivery objectives.

Technical Environment

- Java 17 and Spring Boot 3.x for microservices development.
- REST/JSON microservices architecture and event-driven integration.
- ISO 8583 payments message processing for secure transaction handling.
- Data storage using PostgreSQL and Oracle for high-throughput transactional workloads.
- Deployment platforms including Cloud Foundry (PCF), Docker, Kubernetes with Blue-Green deployments for zero downtime.
- CI/CD pipelines managed via Git-based workflows with automated builds and testing.
- Integration of AI agentic coding tools embedded throughout the software development lifecycle.




- Targeting 99.999% availability across multi-region infrastructure.

What You’ll Bring

- Over 10 years’ experience in backend software engineering, including leadership roles in dynamic, collaborative teams.
- Deep expertise in Java and Spring Boot, with a solid track record of delivering production-grade services.
- Solid background in designing secure, scalable microservices handling high traffic and critical transactions.
- Experience with containerisation technologies (Docker, Kubernetes) and automated testing frameworks.
- Proven ability using AI-assisted development tools to accelerate and improve software delivery.
- Comfort working with and modernising legacy systems as well as developing greenfield projects.
- Experience in agile software development environments.
- Excellent communication skills capable of explaining complex technical concepts clearly.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities focused on efficiency, cost reduction, and quality enhancement.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
