Location: Australia or UK based — with travel across UK, European and other Global project sites
Reports to: Head of Engineering
Direct reports: Senior/Junior Electrical Engineer(s) / Graduate Engineers (as team scales)
Employment type: Full-time, permanent, Remote/Hybrid
About the Role
BESS Broadway (BB) is a global development platform acquiring and developing grid-connected BESS projects through to Ready-to-Build (RtB) across the UK, Europe, Australia and other key markets. As we scale our pipeline, we are hiring a Lead Electrical Engineer to own the electrical engineering scope across our project portfolio — from early-stage feasibility and grid connection strategy through to final electrical design package and technical due diligence at RtB.
This is a hands-on technical leadership role for someone who wants to shape how a growing platform designs, de-risks and delivers utility-scale storage projects across multiple jurisdictions, grid codes and market operators.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Design Leadership
- Lead all electrical engineering activities across the project pipeline, from origination and feasibility through to RtB handover.
- Own single-line diagrams (SLDs), electrical layouts, cable and earthing design, protection philosophy, and equipment specifications (BESS units, PCS/inverters, transformers, MV collector systems and HV substations).
- Define and maintain electrical design standards, templates and review gates applicable across UK, EU, Australia and other target market requirements.
- Review and approve electrical designs and technical documentation produced by development partners, external consultants, EPC contractors and equipment suppliers.
- Perform and/or critically review power system studies — load flow, fault level/short circuit, protection coordination, harmonics and grid stability/compliance studies — produced internally or by specialist consultants.
Grid Connection & Technical Due Diligence
- Lead grid connection strategy, applications and studies across each active market: DNO/NESO processes and G99/G100 compliance in the UK; national TSO/DSO codes (e.g. VDE-AR-N 4110/4120/4130 in Germany, REE/NTA/P.O. codes in Spain) across Europe; and NER, GPS and the R0/R1/R2 process with AEMO and NSPs in Australia.
- Lead technical due diligence on connection offers, connection agreements and grid studies during project acquisition — identifying technical, cost and timeline red flags before commitment.
- Own structural grid risk screening (e.g. connection point/voltage level changes, curtailment, availability requirements, tariff impacts) and translate findings into clear project risk assessments for the investment committee.
- Track evolving grid codes,
connection processes and market rules across all active markets and flag implications for the live pipeline.
- Act as the primary technical interface with network operators (DNOs, TSOs, DSOs, NSPs, AEMO) and specialist grid consultants.
Project Development Support
- Provide electrical input to project acquisition and origination — site suitability, grid capacity, connection cost/timeline risk, and technology fit.
- Develop electrical scope, budgets and program inputs to support project development milestones and investment decisions.
- Support permitting and consenting processes with electrical design input as required by local authorities.
- Contribute electrical technical content to land, planning and grid connection agreements.
Procurement & Contractor Management
- Lead technical evaluation and develop technical specifications and Employer's Requirements, and lead technical bid evaluation and contractor selection for EPC and equipment procurement.
- Review EPC and supplier agreements to identify and mitigate electrical and grid-related risk.
- Manage relationships with external electrical consultants and specialist engineering firms across multiple countries.
- Provide technical oversight into FAT/SAT, commissioning and performance testing planning ahead of handover to delivery teams.
Team & Governance
- Build and mentor an internal electrical engineering function as the platform and pipeline grow, acting as the internal SME on electrical and grid matters.
- Establish scalable engineering processes, document control and design review gates suitable for a multi-market development platform.
- Represent electrical engineering in cross-functional project reviews with development, commercial, planning and finance teams.
Requirements
Experience
- 8+ years' electrical engineering experience, with significant exposure to utility-scale renewable energy, BESS, or substation/grid infrastructure projects.
- Demonstrated experience taking projects through grid connection processes in at least one of: UK, Europe, or Australia — multi-market experience strongly preferred.
- Experience working on projects through to RtB / financial close, ideally within a developer, IPP, or engineering consultancy serving developers.
- Track record leading electrical design packages and grid connection/due diligence workstreams for MV/HV connected assets.
- Experience managing external consultants, contractors and multi-stakeholder technical relationships (network operators, OEMs, EPCs).
Technical & Market Knowledge
- Strong working knowledge of BESS system architecture (PCS, DC/AC coupling, design evolution of containerized units, thermal management interfaces, evolving chemistries, etc.).
- Solid HV/MV electrical design capability: SLDs, protection & control philosophy, cable/earthing design (11kV–132kV+), switchgear and transformer specification.
- Working familiarity with relevant grid codes and connection frameworks: UK (G99/G100, ENA processes); Europe (national TSO/DSO codes such as Germany's VDE-AR-N 4110/4120/4130 or Spain's REE/NTA framework); Australia (NER, GPS, AEMO/NSP connection process).
- Comfortable performing or critically reviewing power system studies (load flow, fault level, protection coordination, dynamic/stability studies).
- Working knowledge of relevant design and modelling tools (e.g. DIgSILENT PowerFactory, PSS/E, PSCAD, ETAP, AutoCAD Electrical, Cymcap, Elek HV, CDEGS) — hands-on modelling not required but strong literacy expected.
Qualifications
- Degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) status, or working towards, strongly preferred.
Other Attributes
- Requirement to travel across UK, European and Australian project locations as needed.
- Strong stakeholder management skills — comfortable working with network operators, EPC contractors, equipment OEMs, planning authorities and internal commercial/investment teams.
- Excellent written and verbal communication; able to translate technical detail for non-technical stakeholders (investors, planners, landowners).
- Additional European language skills (e.g. German, Spanish, Italian) advantageous given multi-market TSO/DSO engagement.
What Success Looks Like in the First 12 Months
- Electrical design standards and review processes established and applied consistently across the project pipeline.
- Grid connection risk screening and technical due diligence embedded into the project acquisition/origination process.
- A trusted panel of external consultants and suppliers in place across key markets.
- One or more projects successfully progressed through electrical design milestones to RtB.
Why Join Us
- Genuine ownership of the electrical engineering function on a growing, multi-market BESS platform.
- Exposure to the full project lifecycle — from origination through to RtB and in cases handover to construction.
- Chance to build and shape a team and process from an early stage.
- Work across some of the most active grid-scale storage markets globally.
