Leading Hand — Albany — Harvest 2026/27
Full time permanent. Run the site, lead the crew, and get in at the ground floor of a growing WA grain business. Demeter Grains is a Western Australian grain export and trading company. This harvest we're opening three new bunker storage sites across the Great Southern and Wheatbelt, and we're looking for the people who'll run them.
We're hiring a Leading Hand for our new site at Albany.
About the role
This is the senior role on site. You'll lead a crew of four or more , hold the standards, and be the person who makes the call when something needs deciding at the gate.
Competent across every job on site — lab, loader, stack face. You set the standard, and you put yourself where the site needs you most
You'll report directly to the Zone Manager.
What you'll be responsible for
- Leading a site crew of four or more through receival and out-loading
- Sampling and grading incoming loads.
- Running the receival point and keeping trucks moving and the queue transparent
- Building, covering and sealing bunker stacks so the grain comes out on grade
- Site safety — inductions, traffic management, and making sure the crew goes home in one piece
- Site hygiene, stack care and general maintenance through the season
- Stock accuracy, records and reporting for your site
- Being the face of Demeter Grains to growers and carriers in the district
What we're looking for
- Experience running or leading a grain receival site, or a comparable operation in farming, bulk handling, earthmoving or logistics
- The judgement to make a call without checking first, and the sense to know when to escalate
- Sampling and grading experience, or the aptitude to pick it up quickly — we'll train you
- Front-end loader and stacker experience
- A genuine safety focus — you're the one setting the tone
- Confidence dealing with growers, including in a disagreement over a grade
- Current driver's licence
The details
- Season runs approximately October 2026 to January 2027
- Up to 12 hour days, rostered across a 13 day fortnight through the peak
- Pre-employment medical and drug and alcohol screening may apply
- Closest site to port and likely to carry the longest season. We may run a second shift here; happy to discuss what that means for the role.
What we offer
- $38–$45 per hour depending on experience, negotiable for the right person
- Full time permanent role, plus overtime through the peak
- Real autonomy — you run the site, not a shift
- Direct line to the Zone Manager and to the wider business
- Genuine progression as we expand our footprint across WA
- A supportive, inclusive crew where safety comes first
