Role Detail

Reporting to the Head of Legal, and part of the wider Office of General Council, this role acts as a legal adviser to the firm on privacy and data protection matters, with a focus on ensuring the firm's practices, policies, and processes are performed in accordance with applicable privacy, data protection and compliance laws.

Based in the Sydney CBD office, you will also assist with related technology issues such as artificial intelligence and cyber security, and related regulatory issues such as anti-money laundering.

The scope of the role covers two components - the 'advisory' part of the role (legal/technical elements) and the 'operational' part (i.e. how the firm responds to and deals with a crisis or data breach).

Key responsibilities include

- Providing legal advice on the development and implementation of privacy and data protection policies and procedures to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and client expectations especially in relation to the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).
- Auditing and reviewing existing policies and practices on data protection and privacy
- Providing advice and assisting with amendments to the firm's privacy statement, website, email text and disclaimers and other documentation (eg terms of engagement)




- Providing risk management advice on areas closely related to data protection and privacy, including artificial intelligence, anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing, ensuring alignment with data protection and privacy obligations across the firm's operations.
- Reviewing supplier and client agreements for key terms relating to privacy, data protection, artificial intelligence, anti-money laundering and other regulatory or information terms as required.
- Playing a key role in cyber security threats and in the management of data breaches including where personal information may be impacted
- Contributing to General Counsel's reporting to the Executive Team for privacy matters relating to Australia and Singapore
- Establishing and maintaining a central repository for materials on data protection and privacy advice to ensure information and knowledge capture
- Providing support and input into key integration projects, including the design, testing and implementation of new software and other processes
- Assist with the preparation of education sessions and internal and external communications as necessary

- At least 3 years' legal experience or the equivalent gained in a similar organisation
- Demonstrated experience with privacy and data protection matters
- Strong analytical skills
- Ability to proactively identify issues quickly and provide business focussed solutions




- Ability to build relationships and influence key stakeholders
- Capacity to multi-task and a flexible, proactive attitude
