Watermark Constructions is seeking an experienced, practical and customer-focused Make Safe Team Leader to lead the delivery of urgent make-safe works across our insurance repair portfolio.
This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who understands the urgency and responsibility that follows an insured event. You will coordinate emergency works that secure damaged properties, control hazards, prevent further loss and provide reassurance to customers during stressful circumstances.
From storm and impact damage to fire, water ingress and other insured events, you will lead a responsive team of Make Safe Officers, field technicians, subcontractors and specialist trades to ensure every job is managed safely, efficiently and to insurer requirements.
The opportunity
As our Make Safe Team Leader, you will oversee the end-to-end coordination and performance of emergency make-safe activities. You will prioritise incoming work based on risk and urgency, allocate resources, monitor job progress and ensure high-quality temporary solutions are delivered within required service timeframes.
You will be a key link between insurers, customers, internal teams and field-based trades—balancing safety, customer care, quality, cost control and operational performance.
Key responsibilities
- Lead and support Make Safe Officers, field technicians, subcontractors and emergency-response trades
- Assess property damage and determine practical, safe make-safe actions to secure and stabilise damaged properties
- Prioritise work orders according to risk, urgency and insurer service-level agreements
- Coordinate the deployment of technicians and trades for urgent temporary works, including roof tarping, window boarding, temporary structural support and hazard isolation
- Manage make-safe job allocation, scheduling, progress and completion across designated regions
- Ensure works focus on safety and damage mitigation, with clear handover to the repair team for permanent reinstatement
- Build and maintain a reliable network of qualified trades, restoration providers and emergency-response contractors
- Monitor contractor responsiveness, workmanship, compliance, costs and customer outcomes
- Review and approve make-safe scopes, costs, invoices and supplier expenditure within approved authority levels
- Maintain accurate job documentation, photographs, reports, invoices and updates within insurer portals and internal systems
- Act as an escalation point for insurers, loss adjusters, customers, brokers, strata representatives and internal stakeholders
- Lead toolbox talks, debriefs and coaching focused on safety, quality, technical standards, customer service and lessons learned
- Monitor performance measures including response times, SLA compliance, job completion, quality, safety, contractor performance and profitability
- Support continuous improvement across procedures, triage processes, on-call arrangements, technology and CAT-event readiness
About you You are calm, decisive and highly organised, with the ability to lead people and make sound decisions in time-sensitive, high-pressure situations. You understand that make-safe work is more than a temporary repair—it is about protecting people, property and customer confidence at a difficult time.
To succeed in this role, you will ideally bring:
- Demonstrated experience in insurance repairs, emergency building response, restoration, reactive maintenance or construction leadership
- Experience leading field teams, subcontractors or trades across multiple sites
- Robust knowledge of make-safe principles, including temporary works that secure, stabilise and prevent further property damage
- Practical experience assessing building damage and coordinating appropriate trades and emergency works
- A strong understanding of workplace health and safety requirements relevant to emergency building work
- Knowledge of risks associated with working at heights, structural stability, electrical isolation, water damage and other site hazards
- Excellent coordination, scheduling, prioritisation and problem-solving skills
- Strong communication skills and the ability to support customers with empathy and professionalism
- Experience working with insurers, loss adjusters, strata managers or similar stakeholders will be highly regarded
- Sound commercial judgement, including experience managing costs, scopes, supplier expenditure and job profitability
- Confidence using job-management systems, insurer portals, email, reporting tools and photo documentation
- A flexible approach to after-hours and on-call requirements during major weather events or catastrophe responses
Qualifications and licences The following will be highly regarded:
- Trade qualification in building and construction, such as Carpentry
- Building supervision experience
- Cert IV in Building and Construction and/or Diploma of Building or Construction Management
- Construction White Card
- Current driver licence
- Working at Heights, EWP or other relevant high-risk-work tickets
- First Aid and CPR certification
