About the role
- Location: Chipping Norton (moving to a new facility in Smeaton Grange within 3-4 months)
The Manual Machinist/Fitter is responsible for manufacturing, modifying and repairing precision components using conventional machining equipment including centre lathes and milling machines. Working from engineering drawings and specifications, you will produce high-quality components for world-leading confectionery manufacturing equipment while maintaining exceptional standards of workmanship, quality and safety.
This role suits a tradesperson who enjoys problem solving, takes pride in precision workmanship and thrives in a low-volume, high-mix manufacturing environment.
Key responsibilities
- Read and understand mechanical and workshop drawings, work orders and production schedules to determine product or job instructions and specifications
- Set up and operate conventional centre lathes, milling machines and associated workshop equipment to manufacture precision components.
- Determine dimensions by logic or by measuring samples
- Perform quality work checks to ensure the product meets quality standards
- Identify product defects and complete appropriate documentation when defects are identified
- Modify, repair and re-machine components in accordance with engineering specifications and design changes.
- Maintain safe operations by adhering to safety procedures and regulations
- Identify opportunities to improve machining methods, setup efficiency and product quality.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the workshop.
About you
- Trade qualification in Fitting & Machining, Mechanical Engineering, Toolmaking or a related trade discipline.
- Proven experience operating conventional lathes, milling machines and workshop machinery within a manufacturing or engineering environment
- Experience working in a low-volume, high-mix manufacturing environment where components and setups vary regularly.
- Demonstrated commitment to Safety First in the workplace and working toward Zero Harm
- Ability to read and follow equipment schematics, logic diagrams and engineering drawings
- Demonstrated ability to take initiative in problem solving and in exercising judgement
- A adaptable, adaptive, and agile mindset with a proven ability to work autonomously or in a team environment
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to consistently achieve precise tolerances and quality standards.
- Strong organisational and time management skills
- Commitment to continuous learning and developing machining capabilities
